“Best in Kaikoura”
Reviewed June 23, 2009

Stayed in Kaikoura for a couple of nights and went to the Green Dolphin both times. The service was as good as anything you would find in any large city and the food was delicious. Can recommend the pasta night $20 for a huge bowl of pasta and a glass of wine. Talking of wine they had a really good selection from all round NZ. Try their home made breads.....wonderful. Its not cheap for the ordinary menu but the food and service is worth it and would certainly recommend it to friends.

“A memorable meal and location”
Reviewed March 8, 2009

This is like an extended bungalow with views to the sea from an elevated position on the right of the road to the seal point, not easy to see (we drove past it twice), but great when you get there. Quite up market and we were glad we dressed up nicely as we normally do when eating out, as this was a cut above other restaurants we dined in nightly on our 5 week tour. In particular, my wife had a lovely fish stew, but the menu was very interesting with fresh ingredients, and good service. 1 starter, 2 mains, 2 aperitifs and a bottle of wine for NZ$143 (£58) so not cheap by NZ standards but well worth spending the money.

“A wonderful, reasonably priced dining experience”
Reviewed February 9, 2009

It's simple. If you're in Kaikoura and you're hungry go to this restaurant. Pricing is reasonable (standard restaurant prices) the staff are polite and engaging, the view is lovely and the food is delicious. There were four of us and we enjoyed it so much we went two nights in a row. We toured the South Island for 16 days, ate out every night and this was our favourite of the lot. Enjoy.

“Excellent food”
Reviewed January 4, 2009

Visited the green dolphin restaurant recently and highly recommend this place.

We took our children who are nearing teens, although they did not have a childrens menu as such we were told the chef would cook half portions of some of the meals for them eg; rib eye and a couple of others which was great.

The service was very good matched by well presented and tasty food.

The lemon lime and bitters was home made so were the breads which were fresh and tasted excellent.

My hubby and I shared the chilli squid which was seasoned well and best of all was not chewy. I had the main of whitebait which came individually rather than a pattie, on new roasted potatoes with a nice sauce, sides had to be ordered seperately. Hubby had their signature dish which was a seafood broth and this was loaded with squid, fresh fish, mussells etc, thoroughly enjoyed it (is always weary of mussells) and all of the seafood tasted fresh.

It is not cheap so allow 25-00 to 38-00 for a main and the sides were about 7-00 extra. But the freshness and good quality food justified the price.

“Really warm welcome - Staff great with kids”
Reviewed August 31, 2008

29.08.08 - Vacation Kaikoura
The Green Dolphin restaurant & bar was recommended to us at the motel we were staying in, (Anchor Inn). We were impressed by how modern the restaurant looked from the outside, with far reaching views of the sea and snow capped mountains. The decor was chocolate and aqua colours with simple, tasteful white lights hung on the ceiling around the bar. This ambience encouraged us to rest on leather sofas and enjoy a pre dinner drink. Lush palms in huge terracotta pots filled the spaces in between the tables and chairs.
The food was excellent. The specials were only $20 (approx 7 pounds UK). Delicious food with a complimentary glass of wine. Perfect.
The best recommendation however was the warm welcome from the owner who went out of her way to make sure that the children (aged between 8 - 11yrs) had colours and activity books to keep them busy. The choices of meals from the menu were a feast for the eyes. I would heartily recommend others should try it for themselves. An excellent place to dine.
