“Very comfortable and friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2011

Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids under 10) decided to give Kaikoura a try for a weekend break (2 nights). The Top 10 Holiday Park was easy to find and is close to amenities. We had a motel unit which admittedly is close to the road and we heard a few trucks during the night - but that would be it's only real fault. The majority of the park is away from the road. We were made to feel very welcome on our arrival. They have a free outdoor spa (in winter a must have). The kids loved the playground and jumping pillow. Even in the freezing cold they still played on it. Our room was very comfortable and well maintained. We will return.

Hi Guys,
Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review, we really appreciate the feedback.
We agree we are a fab place to stay, and are very proud of our great facilities, and ultra friendly staff :-) We feel our very central location, and ability to walk to most local activities makes up for a little road noise - there is always a compromise. Due to the layout of our town, a lot of accommodation, and all of the holiday parks are in the same situation.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Megan

This is a deceptively large camp site sandwiched between a busy main road and a not very busy railway line and adjacent to to the sea. Powered sites are mainly grass and gravel. Communal facilities are the usual reasonable Top 10 standard. It is within walking distance of town. Wifi is available (they have their own system rather than one of the national ones) but it is expensive at $8 per hour and the service response (which goes via Auckland) is very poor. Check-in was easy and welcoming. There is a dump. Other choices are available in town.

We arrived in Kaikoura like most others to do the whale watching. As we could only get on the 0645 slot we decided to book into the Top 10 in the town. I have stayed in about a dozen top 10 parks previously so have something to compare against.

The park itself is very well situated at the end of the town and handy for the whale pick up place. On arrival we asked for a pitch for two small one man tents which we were given. The cost was 20NZD each. The camping pitches themselves are VERY SMALL, I could barely get the two tents plus a small car on the field. It would appear that much like other service towns around New Zealand, the Kaikoura top 10 try to cram as many people into a small space as possible to maixmise profit. This became a problem later on as many campers rolled up, all parking on the camping area at late hours and with their headlights shining straight into the tents.

The other issues with the site were that it is next to a main road with large trucks coming down it all night, its next to the railway on the other side with freight trains coming through a couple of times during the night, it is next to the helipad with helicopters taking off until evening time and due to the proximity of all the tents and campers you can hear every single zip and camper door. The site is also close to the beach so any sort of surf can also be heard.

The facilities of the camp itself were good, clean and the staff friendly, however I will never stay at this park again due to the noise on the place. I estimate I managed 2 hours sleep out of 8 even with ear plugs. The town itself of Kaikoura is geared up for mainly tourists. I found it lacking in any form of charm and very very expensive (4 dollars for a beer).

In short, if you want to goto Kaikoura for the whales or anything else, do it in a day and move on..

Stayed in deluxe cabin with double bed and bunk, fridge, toaster, kettle and TV (with free Sky Movies). Large common dining area with clean kitchen. Heated pool and Games Room. Fantastic jumping pillow and playground for kids. We arrived early and they checked us in early. Park is close to town. Only downfall of this park is it is next to the train station, meaning you usually get some train noise at night.

Stayed in unit 24 - self contained 2 bed motel room. Lots of space, modern and clean. The best bit was the deck with furniture, own BBQ, lawn and high fence all around so perfect for keeping little kids in check and for privacy. Lovely sun and views of the snowcapped mountains too. Probably the best motel room I've ever stayed in - more like your own holiday home than a motel. the camping ground has a fabulous kids playground too with a huge jumping pillow which was a lot of fun for young and old.

As most tourists we stayed in Kaikoura for doing some whale watching and the TOP10 was our choice. As most TOP10, the price is above average and what you get is not. The site itself is clean, showers and kitchen were clean. But the place is close to a railroad track so sometimes the night's sleep was disturbed by passing trains.
What really bugged me was that my credit card had been charged for 1 night before the trip and I paid again when we arrived. I only noticed that once I was back from vacation, sent several emails in order to get a refund but never got any answer. Maybe that's just a one time experience but next time I would stay outside of town and drive in in the morning.

I recently stayed at the Top 10 Holiday Park in Kaikoura. I was impressed with the very clean, modern facilities and the very tidy grounds and play area for the kids. We stayed in a Deluxe cabin which while basic (double bed, bunks, TV, fridge, electric jug), suited our needs and was neat, tidy, comfortable and very clean.
The only negative point about this campground is that it backs on to a railway line. There was only one train during the night which woke me but my daughter slept right through it.
All in all a very pleasant place to stay.
