“Tiny rooms, crowded, flies everywhere”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

Checked in through the Stray Bus. They have recently switched hostels because the former one was not up to standards. This hostel is conveniently located and fairly new, but my room - pictured, has 6 beds in a room twice the size of my closet and that's not big. There is virtually no where to store your bags, so you have to thread your way through the room to get to the toilet or shower, also micro sized at the back of the room. The sliding glass door has no screen, and so is swarming with flies. Since I am the last person here, I have to take a top bunk, but there is no guard railing, so since I don't want to fall off, I plan to sleep in my sleeping bag on the floor of the porch. The lady at the desk suggested she would go and ask the others to move, but that seems really rude, so I said nevermind. The shared kitchen also pictured, is ok, but also limited,

Room Tip: Signs say not to leave anything on the porch as there are thieves around.

A cute, clean place to stay. The rooms were nice, not too expensive and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The It was less than a 10 minute walk to town and the beach. It has a great deck with a good view of the mountains.

Really good place to stay, attractive wooden decks, pretty garden looking out to distant hills, nice neutral, clean rooms, handy for town, lovely cafe next door.
The lady running it is so friendly caring and welcoming, I went back within a week !

Room Tip: If you like to party, get a room at the back near communal area, if you want to sleep to sound of oc...

We have stayed at the Lazy Shag three times now over two years. We are a family of five (two adults and three young teenagers). The first time we stayed at the Lazy Shag we stayed in one of the 6 bed dorm rooms and we couldn't believe how spacious and comfortable it was and it is nice to have your own bathroom. Great also to be able to use the well equipped kitchen. This time we were with another family and so the kids stayed in the dorm room and the parents had their own doubles. The hostel is really centrally located with a great cafe next door and is very quiet. Ayumi who manages the hostel is really helpful and friendly and made our stay very comfortable. If we are ever in Kaikoura again we would not hesitate to stay here.

This backpackers was really lovely and clean. The kitchen was really clean and well equipped (but they had electric stove stops, which I personally dislike and prefer gas ones).

The way the rooms are all along the balcony gives it a really nice feel.

The rooms and the beds were all good, except our room felt really cramped as we had a full dorm room of 6... with only 2 powerpoints, which was really challenging when everyone was wanting to charge their things.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The location of the backpackers was also really ideal.

I enjoyed staying here.

Lazy Shag is in a great location just 5 minutes to the centre of town. The rooms are all ensuite and the dorms are light, clean and spacious. All rooms lead off a balcony so it feels like chalet type accomodation. The double rooms are just as nice, with comfy beds and a clean ensuite. The communal areas are spacious and lead onto another deck which is great for outdoor dining in the summer. Dave does great seal swims for a reasonable price. It is well worth doing this activity.Ayumi is a great host. Thanks for a great stay!
