Lazy Shag
Reviewed November 7, 2011

At our arrival we were pointed around the building, where the reception is. A single lady took care of the reception and since we were travelling with a whole bus of people it took some time before she could hand us our key. The woman in charge however has a good sense of humour and was happy to give a detailed description to our room. (Don't worry, it is far from a maze there).
The double room we were given the first time was decently sized and a good distance away from the dorms. All the double rooms in the Lazy Shag have toilet and shower ensuite but the second time we were there we were warned that when we were taking a shower with the windows closed, the fire alarm might go off. Nevertheless, both rooms were clean with clean sheets on the bed. The kitchen here was not as good as the rooms. There was plenty of space to cook with many others, but it did not feel clean and lacked a lot of cooking tools.
Though this hostel is not on Kaikoura's main street it is not even a 5min walk away from all the shops, restaurants and even the Dolphin & Whale Whatching (a must do in Kaikoura).

Note: There is good wireless available but, as it is in most hostels, you have to pay for it.

I want to give this hostel four stars, but can't quite work out why, so I settled for three.

I stayed here in mid-winter after another place turned out to be closed. I have to admit I was rather put off by the name which sounded to me synonymous with teenage gap-yearers. But in fact it was a pleasant, comfortable place to stay.

It's in a great location on the main street, very close to the short cut across the railway to the beach. (Don't do this in summer when the trains are running, please.) The rooms were warm and comfortable, and the kitchen large and well-stocked. I particularly liked the communal TV/living area which was downstairs away from the dorms.

I can't say anything that would make it stand out, but I certainly wouldn't advise anyone against staying here. I just wish they'd change their name.

Room Tip: Pick one in the middle of the veranda, away from the kitchen and TV room.

Some staff were very strange, and it wasn't the most comfotable place. We only stayed anight so can't comment too much, but there was just a vibe that felt a bit off, not sure how else to describe it. We realize this review isnt very helpful but it wa shard to put our finger on exactly what made us feel really awkward and unsafe. Because of that we'd say, find another place to stay. There areplenty of choice in kaikoura.

On the positive: The location of the hostel is pretty good, the living room is nice and even the dorms have the advantage of the ensuite bathroom and there's on-site parking, pretty clean.

On the negative: Staff was a bit weird, kitchen is way too small for a hostel that size and you have to pay for bedding if you don't bring your own.

the hostel is centrally located and close to the "main" part of the town, though it's so small so everything is relativlly close.
the rooms were too stuffy as there were no windows. same as others says, there were no lids on the trash cans since they were devided by recycling order, so there were many flies as a result of that.
women at reception was very energetic and friendly, too bad the sheets cost money.
tv room was pretty cozy but the tv and movies were out of date...
plenty of parking!!!
all together if you're not coming to kaikoura to view whales or dolphins there's nothing else to do there, so take that under concideration.
