“Stunning views!!!”
Reviewed December 21, 2009

We ended our New Zealand trip at the Lemon Tree Lodge and it was just perfect! We had an ocean view room which had a balcony with stunning views! The rooms are very comfortable and the bathroom is fully equiped! The new owners are very friendly and helpfull! Breakfast is served in your room so you can enjoy it on your balcony! I highly recommend this B&B!

We chose this place based on reviews. However, when we arrived at 3-45pm the place was locked up - not a sole in sight. The place looked somewhat in need of gardening and cleaning. We went down to the local information centre and found out that the place was/is being sold and the owners are no longer in residence. This was confirmed when we spoke to a local just up the road. So . . . . . .. we have done our tariff because the phone number for Lemon Tree is no longer answering and gets redirected to another number which does not answer.
We know all the other reviews are glowing, but this is what happened to us. Not happy!

Our intention is to make The Lemon Tree Lodge the best it`s ever been. We took ownership about three weeks ago. We have been working on the landscape which was unattended for some time.It is important for us as new owners that all of our guest are completely satisfied with their stay at Lemon Tree Lodge. The phone number is still the same; however, we experienced problems on the days around the 14, Sept. 2009, all the calls were being transferred to the previous owners home number in error..This problem was resolved in 3 days. We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused to our guests.Sometimes unexpected this can happen when changes are made.

Sincerely,

New Owners

As part of a 23 day visit to NZ we spent two night at Lemon Tree Lodge on Jan 14th / 15th 2009. Of the 23 nights that we spent in NZ it was the boutique B&Bs that really stood out, one of which was the Lemon Tree Lodge. We stayed in one of the sea view rooms and it was stunning - coming back after the day's excursions and sitting out on the balcony watching the sea and Kaikoura below. The room was clean, tidy and had everything required (bath robes and petals were a lovely touch) - this is not a hotel so don't expect wireless broadband or the like which for me added to the charm. Our host Andy, was extremely friendly and gave some great advice in relation to what to do and where to eat - also double booked us into Whalewatch as a precaution due to windy weather conditions during our stay. The breakfast was top notch and contained everything you would expect with generous portions (fruit portion was particularly nice). Once you round the corner and pass the wall fountain into the lodge you are entering a top quality B&B with a sense of charm and tranquility that is hard to beat, couple that with Andy's friendliness and you have a winner in my opinion. For me the test is always would I stay at Lemon Tree Lodge again - the answer is in a heartbeat - a brillant experience and one that hopefully will be repeated.

We had the Garden Room, a very well presented quality accommodation with extras like robes. The ensuite was a good size and well-equipped. The owner Alan was very helpful, offering lots of useful local information on places to see and places to eat. He lent us towels for our Dolphin encounter, and even offered to run us to a restaurant. The room has access to terrace for a sea view, we would say it was a better option than Ocean view rooms because they were 50% more expensive.

The location is very good, with the main town restaurants within a short easy walk.

Breakfast was served in our own room, continental but a good range and good quality.

We booked the Lemon Tree for a bit of a treat at the end of our tour of South Island and were not disappointed.

From the moment we arrived Andy made us feel like true guests and was always available to give advice and useful information on Kaikoura and all the surrounding area.

We were lucky enough to have one of the rooms in the main house with a beautiful view across the bay.

The hotel is nicely located as well being just a 5 minute walk to the town centre and 10 to the Whaleway Station (yes really) which is where the Whale Watching trips leave from.

As others have already mentioned the Lemon Tree has lots of nice little touches that set it apart from many places you stay. Really the excellence comes down to the personal touch of the owners.

In short - highly recommended

We stayed in one of the annexe rooms at this hotel, which although was small, had everything you needed for a really comfortable stay. The room had some very nice touches, such as a little bowl of chocolate raisins on the counter, and nice 'arty' mirrors. You could tell the owners had an artistic flair. The hotel is a little out of Kaikoura on the hillside, but the centre is easily accessed, we used our car but you could walk it. The breakfast was fantastic and we had it on our little terrace after a dip in the hot tub! The owner is really helpful and freindly, he offered us a free glass of wine to sip on whilst we unpacked which we greatly appreciated. He also advised us on local places of interest which were very helpful. The garden is lovely and tranquil, a great place to unwind. This hotel is great for short stays but I think if you had lots of luggage it might be a bit cramped in the room. I would definately stay again.

We stayed here for our last 2 nights on South Island during our honeymoon in March 2006.

The lodge is nicely secluded with an attractive garden to look out on from our studio. The decor inside the studio was stylish and modern, with everything perfectly clean and fresh. There were nice little extras like the chocolate sweets and fresh fruit which were topped up the next day!

The lodge's location was perfect. Close to Kaikoura centre but on a quiet street, the lodge was handy for trips to the Whale Watching station (10 minutes walk) and the Dolphin Encounter (20 minutes walk). The owners were very friendly and helped us find our way around and provided some local tips.

Although we did not have time to use it, there is also a hot tub with great views of the coast for visitors to the lodge.

We would definitely stay here again!
