We chose Nikau Lodge for a one night stay in late November when we came to Kaikoura to enjoy the stunning scenery and do a whale watch excursion. The Lodge is located on a hillside above the main street in Kaikoura providing a scenic vista of the rocky peninsula jutting into the vivid blue sea backed by snow capped mountains yet is within walking distance to some of the shops and restaurants of Kaikura. We had a nicely appointed room with private bath and a beautiful view of the mountains and sea. Our hosts provided access to drinks and snacks and served a delicious breakfast the following morning. They were helpful in choosing a restaurant along the water where we had a good dinner . We heartily recommend a stay here!

Once we found the Lodge (that’s satnav for you!), Quentin and Jane, not forgetting Jack the dog, made us very welcome and showed us to our spacious room with a magnificent view looking towards the Tasman sea and the mountains beyond.
The accommodation in general was to a very good B&B standard, matched by the friendliness of our hosts. Their advice with regard to restaurants proved to be excellent and the location was well within walking distance of the recommended eateries.
The only factor that may be an issue for some is the traffic noise from the nearby road, which is the main route to the ferry terminal at Picton. However, our room was double-glazed, which reduced the noise, and we slept very well and enjoyed an excellent breakfast the next morning to set us up for the day.

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon here in Kaikoura and are so glad we decided to stay and the Nikau Lodge. Our hosts Quentin and Jane were delightful and so much fun to talk to. Our weather was not desirable for being outdoors alot and they were so hospitable and had several suggestions on what we could do despite the rain. The room we stayed in (Crayfish) was very comfortable and the views were beautiful. Jack the dog was always very entertaining and the food was fabulous! I would highly recommend the Nikau Lodge to anyone staying in this area! We hope to be back again in the future!!

1 Night was not long enough, Jane and Quentin are great hosts, the room is lovely with a very comfortable bed and a newly fitted bathroom. The view of the bay is fantastic. It is also a good central location.

I stayed at the Nikau Lodge for 2 nights in November 2010 and had a lovely time at the B&B.

Location - The B&B is located a short 10-minute walk from the shops and restaurants on the West End, and about a 15-20 minute stroll from the Whale Watch centre. It is on a hill, which means you get a magnificent view of the mountains and beach. Being just slightly away from the street with pubs & cafes means that the lodge is quiet and peaceful. The town is quite small so everything is pretty assessible, especially if you have a car.

Room - I stayed at the Crayfish room, which about 200 sq feet in size, and which was configured to fit 2 twin beds. The beds and pillows were comfortable. The room and the ensuite bathroom was clean and very well maintained. I had a standing fan in my room for days where the air was stuffy. The Crayfish room also had a small 40 sqft annex which had a table and 2 chairs, where you could have a small meal, or sit and read a book during the daytime. The room had coffee making facilities and the hosts thoughtfully provided us with homemade cookies as well. (These were delicious).

Connectivity - Free wireless internet available in -room. I can't live without my computer so this was very, very welcome. Guests were also welcome to use a shared computer in a lounge.

The hosts, Jane and Quentin, were very friendly and welcoming, and helpful with advice on what to do while in Kaikoura. They have a border terrier, Jack, who is one of the best behaved dogs I have ever met. If you don't like dogs, just tell the owners and they say they will keep him out of your way. (I didn't have a problem with Jack at all, but I do like dogs.)

Breakfast was sumptious, with a choice of cereals, toast, omelette, juice, coffee, tea.

The lodge has a spa as well, but i didn't try it out. Parking on the street / within the compound.
