“Great B & B (Homestay)”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

We had planned and booked a Whale Watch trip in Kaikoura during our trip round the South Island and was looking for somewhere to stay just for a couple of nights. After reading several TA reviews for this Homestay decided to give it a go and was so glad we did.
On our arrival Margaret and Nicky made us so welcome and was just like being back home.
The rooms are clean, tidy and comfortable. They have a nice view from their drive and their garden is a must see providing them with a lot of their own food for themselves and a home grown breakfast for their guests which I must add was delicious.
I would certainly recommend this Homestay for anyone looking for a home from home homestay and should we return sometime in the future to visit Kaikoura we will certainly be stopping here again.

The view from this home is breathtakingly beautiful. The attention to detail by N!ikki and Margaret was delightful. Breakfast included homemade bread, fresh laid eggs and home-grown tomatoes and homemade jams. How can you go wrong with such wonderful hosts in such an inviting atmosphere? Don't miss seeing the gardens.

On our travels in New Zealand we have been unsure of the definition of a home stay. This is no boutique B&B but nonetheless a joy. Margaret and Nicky welcome you into their home and provide comfortable accommodation and amazing home produced breakfast with no pretension. You are provided with your own lounge, kitchen and laundry facilities whilst always feeling that you are a welcome guest in their home. Thanks for a great (home) stay.

The host was very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was excellent, just like staying at Grandmas. Homemade jam, eggs from their own chickens, and good ol home style food. Beautiful garden, and very comfortable lodgings. Wonderful people, and over the top service.

This is a really charming house with a a nice view over the bay. The home-made breakfast is wonderful. The room are clean and confortable. You couldn't except better (or even equal) price value in any hotels and you would miss the incredible hospitality of Margaret and Nicky. Thanks a lot for your warm and friendly welcome as well as your help during our whole stay to plan our meals and activities. A perfect homestay for a still affordable budget.

We had been driving a long time before we reached Kaikoura and the lovely Margaret and her daugher Nicki. It was like coming home!!! The house is beautiful, the gardens a delight and I only wish I had known there was a swimming pool or I might never have left!!!! The rooms were perfect and the wonderful breakfast Margaret makes is out of this world. All the reviews we totally agree with and cant add any more praise than already said. Just a simple thank you Margaret for a lovely evening and a lovely memory of Kiwi hospitality. God BLess Penny and Gillian

Charming home with a gorgeous view. I can't say enough about this pleasant stay. We were offered tea and chocolate cake on arrival. The gardens are full of colour and there are vegetable gardens and fruit orchards and a chicken house where your breakfast eggs are raised! Clean spacious bedrooms and a lounge with a woodstove. Margaret fas wonderful stories to share at breakfast and she makes her own bread, museli, and grows her own fruit. This is a rare find. Thankyou Nicky and Margaret.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Margaret Woodill is the classic Kiwi grandmother and thinks nothing of getting up at 5.30 am to cook a full breakfast including homemade bread before your whale watching or dolphin swimming trip in Kaikoura, New Zealand. She’s lived in her Kaikoura peninsula home with its sweeping views of sea and mountains since 1934. She began taking in passing travellers over 20 years ago, just before the whales and dolphins turned the township into a tourist Mecca. When her four children left home, opening a bed and breakfast seemed a logical use for spare bedrooms and bathrooms. Since husband Bob’s death in 1999, Margaret says guests are her family and that’s why she calls it a HOMESTAY rather than a B&B. ... more   less
