“Lovely homely host....”
Reviewed January 14, 2011

We had a small double room with two single beds in, patio doors took you out onto the veranda that allowed you to look over to the mountains.. We had a private bathroom and toilet which was across the corridor from our room...Room 1....others have to share facilities...Clean good decor and very comfy beds, with an electric under blanket and additional blankets if needed. One thing was there was no hairdryer but I did have my own....Full use off the household facilities...ie TV lounge, tea coffe as you wish wiith home made muffins, kitchen to cook own meals etc.. washing machine, dryer and the internet at no additional cost,, is an absolute bonus....Host Judy makes you feel very welcome and no one should abuse her good will.....If you intend staying more then a few days room 1 maybe a bit small,......but it does have it's own toilet etc.....Location near to the shops and activities, Judy will give assistance with booking trips etc if needed.......A wonderful host...thanks

Our room was on the ground floor, with a share bathroom. The room was lovely and clean and overlooked the lovely backyard full of trees and flowers. Host Judy was warm, friendly and eager to share tips of the area. Beds were very comfortable and there was more than adequate storage.

If we stayed in Kaikoura again we would stay on the other side of the bay, which is closer to the town and facilities. You would definitely need a car to get to and from the shopping centre and the attractions, as Brook House is certainly not within walking distance!

There is one dog and two cats in residence which we enjoyed but mention should be made of resident cats, as many people are allergic to cats. The dog is in the house all the time (a poodle, so shedding hair allergies should not be a problem) while the cats were in and out.

This is a traditional B&B in that you share the kitchen, dining room and living room with the host, so bear that in mind if you like privacy and your own space!

The house was clean but unfortunately it smelled like a wet dog when we arrived (resident poodle) and our room on the ground floor had a real damp smell as well. Difficult when it rains I know but unpleasant just the same. I think the internet ad should mention the resident cat too as a lot of people are allergic to cats and if that had been made known, I wouldn't have stayed there.
The room boasted private shower facilities but it was no more than a "cupboard" in the corner of the bedroom and the water barely trickled out of the rose.
The bed was very comfy with good quality linen supplied. The surroundings were extremely quiet and inducive to good sleeping.

My husband and I were very pleased with our stay at the Brook House Bed and Breakfast. The room was very clean, bed comfortable and the host provided a delicious breakfast along with some appreciated extras like chocolates and flowers by the bed. We were in a queen room without private bathroom but it was quiet and the bathroom was just next door. A car is recommended as the property is about 2km from the center of town. Judy, our host was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We rang in the New Year over a glass of wine on the lovely deck out back looking out over the snow capped mountain. Kaikoura''s scenery was stunning and the walks were amazing. Recommend this bed and breakfast for reasonable, clean and friendly accommodation in Kaikoura.

I arrived at Brook house with the distinct feeling that I had been there before. I had 4 years ago! That should give you an indication of how much I enjoyed staying there. The room I stayed in had it's own shower and a small lounge and kitchenette. The hospitality is second to none, the rooms were clean and tidy, fresh towels were provided, the lounge and kitchen upstairs are at the guests disposal. The owner Judy has a wealth of knowledge regarding the local area and can always recommend things to do/ places to eat. The view from the breakfast table is spectacular.

This really is a home from home, nice spacious room but best of all was the lovely kitchen/lounge area which is for sole use of guests. The owner Judy makes muffins and leaves them for guests to enjoy beside the lovely log fire with a cup of tea! Nice garden outlook, free Internet and unbelievably good value for money. I could not recommend this place highly enough! And do not be put off by the appearance of this place from the outside...it looks like nothing until you are inside!!

Our room was clean, comfortable, and quiet. It was on the second floor along a shared balcony with a good view of mountains in the distance. Facilities were not en suite, but were clean and well kept and due to the size of the place, were not too busy. Breakfast was left out in the kitchen for us to eat on our schedule--bread for toast with lots of spreads, fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, muffins, juice, and hot water for coffee/tea/cocoa. The owner, Judy, is very friendly and helpful--when she saw us hanging our wet gear on the balcony railing, she offered to throw our stuff in her dryer for free. There is a very sweet black mini poodle, Louise, roaming the premises. All in all, a pleasant place to stay.
