Seaview Motel
Ranked #16 of 32 Kaikoura B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 4, 2011

This motel is a real disaster. It is shabby, rundown and not very clean. The bungalow is an old house which has been converted, not at all successfully. It is very poorly equipped. Heaps of cupboards in the kitchen/living room but little in them. Furniture looked as if it came from a dubious second-hand dealer. No courtesy milk in the fridge. We did not stay on to sample the beds. Not allowed to park outside the door as the front unit in the house could block your car in the driveway.

This motel is highly overpriced for what is there. We wouldn't advise anyone to stay there when there are plenty of better places in Kaikoura. Be warned!

Have returned from my stay in New Zealand wondering how I had got it SO wrong by staying at Sunrise Bungalow motel in Kaikoura, I have now realised why! The Sunrise Bungalow comes under the neighboured Seaview Motel name. Having now located all the reviews for this company I would have given it a wide berth as previously written by wise reviewer!
Albeit a beautiful location and clean, it's a simple as this: cold, shabby, scruffy and slightly bemused owner, dated and we just didn't feel 'right' staying there for more than one night.

Me and my friend have just completed our long awaited holiday in New Zealand. There were many "highs" in this beautiful country. The weather was very good during our stay which did make our holiday more enjoyable. Much better than we get back home in the UK where it is usually drizzling most of the time.
During our stay in New Zealand we stayed at many accommodation places and we feel that we need to mention the Seaview Motels in kaikoura. Kevin and his wife ( cannot remember her name ) where just so nice. They were new to the business and for me they were doing everything right. Service was excellent, rooms were clean and comfortable and the views from the room were breathtaking.
We both have no hesitation in recommending this motel.

When we first arrived here we laughed for hours. Knowing that we were only staying for one night helped with our jovial mood. If you were staying for longer than a night (maybe even an hour depending on your temperament) you would probably be really angry as it's not exactly great value for money.

Lets start with the good points. There were four of us staying in a cottage that would easily sleep ten so extremely spacious. The view from the front window was stunning as, the clue's in the name, the bungalow overlooked the sea. It was a short drive to the seal sanctuary which was well worth going to and a quarter of an hour walk into the town itself. The owner/manager was nice enough. He wasn't particularly smiley but a rugby fan. When he found out we were from Swansea he spent some time talking to us about our rugby team. There were three comfortable double beds. There was a large kitchen with a dining table.

Bad points. Deep breath. I have never been so cold in my life. It was the middle of the winter while we were there and there was no central heating in the bungalow. The owner had placed four portable fan heaters in a few of the rooms but obvioulsy not long before our arrival. There were more rooms than heaters so we had to prioritise on which rooms to place them in. The bathroom lost out and my morning shower took all of 30 seconds as even the hot water was tepid. The bathroom was tiny with no bath but a small shower cubicle, toilet and sink. The cottage itself had a funky smell - from the heaters, from damp, cold and underuse. if you did try to sleep ten in there, two people would have been sleeping on a double bed randomly place din the living room and one would have been sleeping ona bed in a hallway. Half the inhabitants would have been frozen by morning. The TV aerial was long gone so while there was a television it had no reception. There was a DVD player but since we didn't know this we had no DVDs to play on it. Except the three that were left for us. They were the types you get free with the Sunday paper. One of the sinks in the kitchen didn't work and in our rationing out of heaters the kitchen lost out. You could have left icecream out on the counter overnight and it would have stayed frozen til morning.

Seriously one to avoid. A backpacker hostel would be better than this motel.

If you're looking for all modcons, then don't stay here! Terry and Bon's motel is a lovable higgedly-piggedly place with furniture garnered from, seemingly, all manner of kiwi bric-a-brac shops. The owners couldn't be nicer and the views over sea and mountain are unbeatable.

This place, as others have written, is nothing but a joke. Totally overpriced for what you get. The place is old, run down, and beyond basic. And the owners are rude and a disgrace to fellow New Zealanders. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! We checked out after one night into another place, which was cheaper and way, way better.

Kaikoura is a great place and has many other places which are better value. Do not waste your money staying here. Stay clear.

We are 4 of many who have had the same experiences as per the reviews.

Shabby room, beds were suposedly made, ie duvet thrown over top, sheets not touched. Owner ripped us off, overcharged us, with no compromise reached. A dodgy motelier! Do not give this guy your credit card number, he'll do what he likes with it.
