a snafu with the reservation when we arrived which they fixed quickly. We went attracted by the rooms at tree houses, which didn't disappoint. beautiful views. loved swimming at the pool (a bit cold) by the (smelly) deer, fantastic experience overall. food was delicious. walk to the beach to see the sunset was unforgettable. expensive but we only live once, right?

Following a long trip from the east coast of the USA to the South Island we decided on a few days to decompress at Hapuku just outside of Kaikora. A 90 minute drive from the airport brought us to this unique setting where we settled in to a top floor of the tree house. This is not your average tree house; views of the Pacific from the shower window and the Kaikora mountain range from the sitting room. Well appointed, clean and quiet. The jacuzi/tub was particularly appreciated. Staff was very accomodating to the last man/woman. We enjoyed 3 wonderful dinner meals which were of a quality consistent with any fine restaurant on the world scene. We particularly enjoyed our introduction to NZ wines. Breakfasts were overwhelming in quality and quantity. Be prepared for highly variable weather as a south wind can drop the temperature 20 degrees in a few minutes.

Room Tip: Our top floor in Treehouse "Tui" was great

We were impressed upon arrival, but staying for a second night generated even more appreciation of the establishment. The "Tree Houses" are very well appointed - and their interior design is really something to see. We stayed in a "two story", with parents upstairs and teens down. Be mindful that the lower room is not quite as fabulous as the upper (views) - but nice, none the less. Complimentary drinks / beer in rooms, with fresh cookies each day; iPod with music selection; very clean. Manager was super friendly and attentive. Lobby, reception area and available kitchen are of the same excellent standard. Breakfast and dinner are really a treat - we enjoyed each. It is not cheap to stay here - so there needs to be a high standard. Dinner's do tend to run a bit too long, with significant time between courses - sequencing could be a bit more crisp. Delicious, none the less. Suggestions: Equipment and tools located at pool / sauna could be moved to a more "out of sight" location. Walk down to surf is un-impressive. Short drive into Kaikoura - nice selection of shops.

Hapuku Lodge is such a special place. We stayed in a family tree hut (Piwakawaka) for two nights (Jan 4/5) and our 12 year old daughter thought she'd landed in heaven as much as we did. Her room felt quite separate to ours, as far as she was concerned (such grown-up luxury from her perspective!) but of course was completely safely contained in the same space. The decks, bathrooms, free mini-bar, delicious cookies on arrival, wifi, wonderfully comfortable beds, space, design and outlook of the rooms (ours upstairs from hers) was capped off by an iPod playing jazz in the room as we arrived. Mike who met us on arrival at the Lodge was so welcoming.

The dinner menu was incredible - Fiona is a complete star, and the meals on both nights - and the breakfasts - were perfect. All locally sourced, and much of it grown on site, with a broad wine list to accompany. Dinner and breakfast is included in the price and if you enjoy delicious food like us - our daughter included - it is really worth treating yourself to a couple of nights here. Nothing is too much trouble for Fiona - or for her team, and if you have food allergies or preferences they are so keen to accommodate. The coffee is excellent too - and we're pretty fussy about coffee!

We have seen Hapuku Lodge from the road as we have passed on our way down the Kaikoura Coast many times, and always dreamed of staying. I am so glad we finally managed to organise it - it was a great chance to experience Kaikoura Whalewatch too and so lovely to have such an excellent and genuine hospitality experience in our own country. Chris and Fiona who run Hapuku Lodge are perfect hosts.

Wonderful place to stay more than one night!
Design suite, nice dinner and great views. Even though we were the only couple with 2 young children in the hotel we had a warm welcome and everything was provided to make our stay perfect.

Our family stopped at Hapuku Lodge as we make our way south to Queenstown. We spent two nights and wished we could have stayed longer. How many other places can you get a treehouse with a view of mountains, olive groves and a big blue sea all at once? This was our big splurge for the trip, but it was totally worth it. The room design is fantastic: a fireplace lounge looking at the mountains, the bed and desk in the center, and a bathroom facing the sea. It's all one big room but each section can be set off by curtains. The grounds are splendid and since most people seem to take off during the day, we had the place practically to ourselves. There's not much to do here, but that is exactly what we needed. It's a shame more people don't take advantage of this wonderful spot.
