When I stayed here I wrote in my travel diary 'Best day ever!'. I'd been on the whale-watch tour and seen 3 sperm whales and 3 humpbacks - as well as playful dolphins and serene albatross. So maybe I was biased, but the Anchor Inn made the stay even more special - wonderful view of the sea (across the road) and snow-capped mountains, welcoming hosts who provided milk and biscuits, and a beautifully furnished, spacious room. Don't hesitate - book it now, and I hope you have as magical a time as I did.

This property deserves it's great reviews. We had a large unit with a clean well equipped kitchen and a nice bathroom (loved the towel heaters). The decor was more modern and tasteful than most motels and our room overlooked the sea. Yes, it is a walk into town, but with such great ocean views who cares! The exercise gave us an appetite for our evening meal and you can always drive. We borrowed videos and magazines from the small library in reception which was a nice touch. I feel the price was very reasonable for the standard of accomodation and friendly welcome.

Overview:
We stayed at the Anchor Inn for one night. Upon arrival, the staff was extremely friendly and offered a number of suggestions for activities and dining in the area.

We stayed in one of the non-beach-facing rooms. We were impressed with the size of the room, quite large. It also had kitchen facilities including a range, microwave and refrigerator. The bathroom was equally impressive, spacious and spotless with a heated mirror to prevent fogging.

The bed was very comfortable and the room was well insulated from noise. With the windows open, we could hear the surf from across the street, but with them closed, it was completely silent.

Location:
The Anchor Inn is located halfway down the Kaikoura penninsula. It's probably a 20 minute walk to the main restaurant and business district. However, there are several other restaurants further down the peninsula (The Pier and the Green Dolphin) and somewhat closer... maybe 10 minutes walk.

The Anchor Inn is well situated for a hike to the seal colony and along the penninsula clifftop trail. We did a loop of it and returned to the hotel in around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Gorgeous views, highly recommended.

Amenities:
The Anchor Inn has laundry machines available... one washer and one dryer. A cycle on both was $4 ($2 each) and a soap packet was $1.

We asked about internet and were told that their setup required a special device called a "vodem" and that it was being used by another guest. We never got the chance to try it... however, they were very kind in allowing us to use the computer in their reception office for email and internet for free.

This “best motel in NZ” for 4 years straight, rated #1 on TA lived up to its reputation. It was perfectly located out of the bustle of the downtown, with clean tidy room with kitchenette looking right across to the ocean. We had a terrific walk along the top of the cliffs for about an hour, and could see a lot of dolphins close to shore, and whales spouting far away. This walk and view alone would be a reason to stop in Kaikoura, and the Anchor Inn was the best place to stay, in our opinion.

The Anchor Inn is situated right on the sea front about 30 minutes walk from the centre of Kaikoura. The room was enormous and well equipped (kitchen, tv, dvd, wireless interenet), and would have been spacious for a family of 4. The staff were friendly and helpful, providing useful information about places to eat, attractions and the whale watching tours.
There's also a crayfish stall located just across the road from the motel, which does very nice takeaway seafood.
Make sure to close any windows before turning the lights on though, there are quite a lot of flies around at night.

Positives:
Out host was great. She could not have been more helpful.
Lovely view from the room over the ocean
A little out of town so more peaceful.
Great to be able to borrow books or DVDs
Communal laundry was handy.
Had all the facalities

Negatives
Decor only ok - nothing very stylish.
Thought it was a little expensive for the price

Had an ok meal in the White Morph. The food was good but it lacked atmosphere. The decor was very dark. I would be unlikely to go again. It just felt drab!

Property was pleasant, and on the sea front. The room was large with kitchen area and jacuzzi bath. Perfectly clean and pleasant and helpful staff. However, this place is expensive and I dont feel it was worth the money. It might be "new zealand's best motel" from a few years back, but it is expensive on the back of that, and there are probably other hotels in kaikoura that are better value for money.
