“Nothing fancy, but adequate”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2010

We stayed for 2 nights in a 2 bedroom unit, mainly as somewhere to stay so we could go on a whale watch tour. All units are self-contained. Nothing fancy, but adequate. The first night we were there was quite cold for April, so at least there was a heater in the main room, plus spare blankets for the kids. Electric blankets were provided but we did not use them. Kitchen was small and the only power switches (for toaster, kettle) were all located near the microwave. The place is a bit away from the centre of town which can be seen as good or bad, but not more than 5 mins drive. Supermarket short drive away too. It seems the place has not been reviewed for a while, and there could be a change of ownership since the previous reviews. The guys at the front desk were fine. The dairy at the front of the motel appeared closed most of the time, but could be opened on request according to the sign on the door. There does not seem to be much of a playground at the motel anymore - just a swing and rusty old see-saw. However, there is a public playground down the road about 2 houses away.

We only stayed one night, but found that Willowbank set a pretty high standard that was not met by many other accommodations we stayed at during our 11 day trip.

We were a bit worried about what we'd find, based on other bad or mediocre reviews. It did *seem* like a long drive past the town centre and many other motels before we spotted Willowbank. The whole area was very quite during this winter season. The reception area wasn't impressive- being tiny, but it was filled with many useful brochures and maps and the younger person that served us was friendly and efficient.

So we were pleasantly surprised when we entered our room to find it spacious, really clean and modern. The bathroom only has a sliding door to separate it from the living space, but we found that this was really common in other motels. As you can see from the pictures, it's all sparkling white and I liked that the soaps/shampoo were kept in self-dispensing containers attached to the wall. Yes, only a shower curtain separates the area from the toilet, but we also found this to be usual. It's not like you have to wade through a pool of water to use the toilet. The only suggestion I have is that there needs to be more ledges or drawers, somewhere to keep our toiletries dry.
The kitchen was great- had everything we needed. No complaints.
The living space was great- plenty of places to hang or put our stuff. eg. there's wall hooks next to the single bed, a roomy lounge next to the double bed, chairs and a table. It had a TV, working alarm clock and a phone, which I found very convenient to call those free 0800 business numbers.
The room had a pretty powerful heater that kept us plenty warm without turning on the electric blankets. I did, however, have an issue with the loudness of the unit when it operates- a strong purring sound that came on and off, according to the rheostat temperature. I guess it wouldn't bother you if you're a deep sleeper.

A bonus not found elsewhere was that there was free broadband at the reception, albeit it was on one really old looking computer at the corner. It was fast enough.

On the day of checkout, the reception guy kept our luggage for us free of charge. We also discovered the small deli-like place next to, and owned by the motel, which was convenient. All in all, it was a very good stay!

We stayed here for 3 nights over Easter and found the place comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. The cost was affordable especially considering it was Easter.

The unit was modern and clean and everything worked. We cooked our own meals as well as eating out and the kitchen though small was sufficient.

It is set back from the road so there was no traffic noise. We slept well. I'd stay here again without hesitation.

The Motel says its three star, but I would say its around 1-2 star.

While the rooms look like they have been redecorated, its been done very poorly. The bathroom was the worst - the shower had no door and so water went everywhere!

Not recommended!

we arrived here late afternoon after a fairly long drive up from ashburton,we were on route to nelson and decided to stay here overnight,to give both drivers a rest really(we did book it b4 we left the uk)it was a basic unit but ok for what we wanted,we had no complaints about the unit really, there is a really nice place to eat and drink about 250m away.and a very nice supermarket next door to it,if we came back to kaikoura i don't think we would stay here again,it was ok but nothing to call home about really.

  • Liked — it was quiet and we had a lovely view of the mountains just outside the window
  • Disliked — it was too basic for us

Having stayed at this motel before (in Feb '06) we knew what to expect: clean, spacious accommodation.

As a party of three adults we opted for the same two-bedroom unit we'd had last time, #8. Cost, NZ $145 per night.

Bedroom 1 had a queen bed, Bedroom 2 had three single beds plus a rollaway.

The living-room was large 'n' lovely. It had three two-seater settees, a dining-table and chairs plus a tv. The large windows afforded great views across the fields and farmland to the Kaikoura Ranges beyond.

Adjacent to our unit was the small Laundry Room. As the previous reviewer stated, an 'Honesty' system is in operation. It costs NZ $2 to use the washing-machine and NZ $2 to use the drier. In the garden area was a washing-line available for guests' use.

A short drive away was the New World supermarket, and beyond that the centre of Kaikoura itself.

We were happy with our 2-night stay at the Willowbank.

I live in double room which is nice. The hotel has a family feeling. The hotel has a little garden and a playground. I tried to jump on the trambolin which funs to do so. You may also try a swing.

Facilities are great. They have a laudry machine and a dryer which uses merit system, for those who use must drop coins in a small medicine box in the laudry room.

Owner is not friendly but she is fine to answer your question.

If you want to try seafood, I would recommend the Pipi's restaurant and cafe. The chef has his magic. The foods taste great.
