“Great value and facilities”
Reviewed March 18, 2008

For 69NZ$ we had a double en suite room in Dusky Lodge. Pretty good value. Now add in free parking, a large pool, a hot tub, a sauna, a sun deck with a view of the mountains and three kitchen/dining rooms and it becomes great value. It is also well located, maybe a 10 minute walk to town.

The only downers were messy, disorganised kitchens - why did one have lots of kettles and another only one? And the view from our room was just the car park. But still, a great deal.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room (especially linen and shower) were dirty. Found numerous hairs in the bed, the duvet cover had not been cleaned and we have both got bed bugs from the place and are still itching 2 weeks later. Not the first instance of bed bugs at this place, from what I have heard either. The lady at reception had a terrible attitude also. Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. AVOID!!!!!!

Wish I'd checked out tripadvisor before booking a room at Dusky Lodge, having experienced similar problems to the guy who stayed there in January. On paper the hostel is great with a spa and swimming pool. The problem is they cut corners by not washing their duvet covers when a new person sleeps in a bed. They give you a top sheet which they say makes it hygienic, which is ridiculous since everyone moves around when they sleep. My friend and I stayed there last week, both our duvet covers absolutely stank and had clearly not been washed for a good while. We went to bed after 9pm so couldn't request clean bedding and had a very bad night's sleep as a result. In the morning the manager wasn't around to complain to, I have since emailed and just received rude responses as if they don't think providing clean bedding is a priority in the hostel business. DON'T STAY HERE!! there are loads of other fantastic hostels in New Zealand with lovely clean beds!!

We stayed one night at Dusky Lodge (early January) and were eaten alive by FLEAS or some sort of BED BUGS.

When raising this with the receptionist at 6am the next morning she advised that it was a KNOWN problem!!!!

On explaining our predicament to the manager and requesting a discount for the inconvenience he inferred we were lying. On pointing out that his colleague had stated it was a known problem he reluctantly gave us $10 back, which didn't even cover the cost of all the anti-itch creams we had to buy.

Due to the FLEAS and completely rude response we received I would recommend AVOIDING THIS ACCOMMODATION AT ALL COSTS.

We relocated to the Adelphi, which had extremely nice managers, fantastic rooms, and was located right in the middle of the town. The Adelphi was absolutely fantastic!!!

I stay there only one night, travelling on the bike, nice place, ok, but I sleep with 5 in the room and got all my expensive belonging stolen that night, the girl at the office was not to conserned about it as they have advertising on the wall about been aware of people stealing.....and just carry on her work booking the next lot of people for the following night.......I am sincerelly desapointed of the reaction of the management. And I also thing because this hotel as so many rooms and sleep so many people they alway will have this problem, as it is just like been in a factory "processing backpacker", I have been in many other smaller backpacker whrere by within one hour of been there you know everybody, so to speak....
Anyway if you go there make sure you triple lock everything of value......

We did the whale watching in Kaikoura and decided to stay at Dusky lodge. Overall we were pleased. The hostel was clean (which is my top requirement). We were staying with some friends and originally had two doubles with ensuite. Well, the management actually saved us a few bucks by allowing us to have two rooms next to each other with a bath that we shared between the 4 of us. This was pretty cool of them and saved us some $$. I can't comment on the kitchen as we ate out, but the seating area was nice. We had some lovely conversations with other travels, which was also a plus.

We stayed upstairs but the downstairs was downright chilly at night.

We had a large private ensuite room, with TV coffee making facilities etc with a view of the sea, we paid $75 NZ. Room was clean, clean laundry and towels. There is cheap internet at the facility a bakery next store and a Thai restaurant (very cheap although we didn't eat there) attached. Also a spa and sauna which we did not use.

Kitchen was not well stocked and the place is essentially a backpackers.

Suited us fine for a 1 night stay.
