“Enjoyable meal, and Monteiths Summer Ale on tap”
Reviewed January 5, 2014

Seems like a popular venue with locals, and we only just managed to sneak onto a table. Really nice mussels and squid starters, followed by a deceptively filling Thai Beef Salad. Service was informal and friendly, and both the girls made time to chat to us and our two kids. Only low point was waiting an age for our desserts (due to the apple crumble), but again we enjoyed these and the bill was reasonable. Would definitely return.

“Great food and service”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

We went to this pub when the wind and rain was lashing outside. Although very busy service was good and food came pretty quick. the kids hadfish and chips and an adult portion of ribs, wow what a portion size, so we had to help him. Hubby had coq au van pie, which as a being very fussy about pies, he says was ok (thats a compliment from him). I had a porterhouse steak on special for $16. All the food was of big portions and great taste. I would recommed here if you want a filling & resaonably priced good meal.
My only criticism is that some local fishermen were in the bar and were constantly using foul language, before you say we shouldnt have sat in the bar, this was the only table available as the rain had bought everyone in.

“In a place of plenty of seafood make time for a steak”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

The Whaler had a great steak special on while we were there which was different from all the beautiful seafood Kaikoura has to offer. The atmosphere was great and the the service very friendly plus good value for money. Well done or rare!

“Whale of a meal!”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

It was cold, there had been snow the day before and we walked into be greeted by a roaring fire. Lovely! We had enormous portions but they were happy to give me a doggy bag!! Meals were good and staff very pleasant.
