“Brilliant Family Adventure”

Clarence River Rafting Kaikoura
Reviewed January 21, 2014

I recently did the Clarence River Rafting 3 day trip with my mother in law (70), husband and two children (8 and 10). From the moment we arrived and started packing, to the hot tub on our return we were looked after exceptionally well. Any nervousness the children had was quickly dispelled as they were shrieking with delight going down the rapids! In three days we went from baking in mid 30s heat to heavy, cold rain and at all times we had great fun. I can't stress enough how great the guides were. Bridget , Lenny and Sam were an exceptional team. I felt we were in the best of hands. Very competent, wealth of knowledge about local geology, fauna and flora and most importantly great craic! Brilliant with the kids, provided superb grub and just generally made the trip a great memory for us all. If you ever get the chance definately do this trip.

We did a 3 days guided trip. The steep cliffs, geology of the area, scenery and guides were wonderful. It rained almost the whole time, but that cant be helped and is part of the adventure. And we didn't need to worry about sunscreen! The guides Lenny, Bridget and Sam did a wonderful job of cooking beautiful meals (paua, vension, salmon and even deserts) and worked really hard to ensure everyone had a great time. Bridget's homemade treats were stunning - from pesto to tiramisu. Everything is so well organised - right down to chairs at the campsite. A lot of time is spent packing rafts, unpacking rafts, preparing camp and then disassembling camp and packing the rafts. The river was flowing quite moderately so we didn't do a lot of rafting on the first two days. It is definitely not strenuous and a lot of the rafting actually involves just sitting on the raft. It is suitable for all ages, except young children. Our teenagers really enjoyed Lenny's adventurous guiding as he took the route with the rougher rapids - which provided lots of fun and some Lenny rocks!

Our disappointment was that we helicoptered in - but we were bumped out of the front seat by a non paying passenger and I was then squashed into the back of the helicopter and had to share my seat with a young boy from another group. There was another group of our trip (a mother and two children) - and a few times we were made to feel that we were infringing on their trip. And this definitely wasn't the case at all.

Its not a cheap trip and for this reason I would highly recommend the half day trip for a family group. In this trip you would experience some great rapids and rafting. It is not as scenic as the multi day trip, but its more affordable for a family group.

It was a great trip and many thanks Bridget, lenny and Sam. Also Jeff and Ben for the effort and organisation they put in before, during and after the trip. It was appreciated.

Doing a 6 day rafting/camping activity with such an excellent company was fantastic. It is worth taking the time out to appreciate what New Zealand has to offer in the way of fabulous scenery, peace and breathtaking vastness. The amazing skill and knowledge of the guides and their hospitality made the break special. Bridget, Clinton, Kaca, Maddie and Dan also provided brilliant food and snacks-making bread after a days rafting and baking on a camp fire is an act of magic. If you are in New Zealand do this trip!

This is a really outstanding thing to do in NZ. Rafting down the beautiful Clarence River through some of the most spectacular scenery available, being guided by a knowledgeable and entertaining team. We did a six day trip: pretty remote and the camping was basic but the team did an amazing job with the catering and looking after everybody safely. The rafting was great fun and 200km from mountains to the sea just flashed by! If you are in NZ for a few weeks this is really recommended to get off the beaten track and see some of the country that few others see. Great company.

Myself and friends spent six days rafting the Clarence River recently. The fact that it was the second trip for many people in the group with Clarence River Rafting speaks volumes about the company. Our guides were entertaining, responsible, capable, fun, informative and relaxed. Their skills on the river were brilliant and their organisation around camp was fantastic. Although we opted for a self-catering trip their invovlement made everything run smoothly.

I would recommend this guiding company to anyone!
