This was an interesting walk undertaken in the forlorn hope that we might sight a whale on it. The walk starts with a flat section past an old whaling hut but eventually there is an ascent to rolling hills (not unlike Devon, UK in terms of land use and foliage) and spectacular views of beautiful bays. There were fairly frequent sightings of distant dolphins on our walk which was nice. There are new plantings of trees and shrubs along the way showing that the authorities are thinking ahead about how visitors will enjoy the walk in years to come. The descent down to South Bay Point is a pretty steep paved path but the village itself is flat before the cut through back to Kaikoura (which could, at a bifurcation of the path, be better sign-posted). Take Tom's is path (ie turn right if in doubt...or google map it!!). As other reviewers have commented, the freshness of the sea-air is bracing. As it gets cooler into April, it'll be worth taking a warmer top and if the forecasts suggests rain, some appropriate protection. Walk times as estimated on the signposts are pretty accurate at a moderate walking pace with photo-stops, though we finished the last section much more quickly that the estimated 1hr 10mins, probably as the children (20s, but still children !) were hungry and there were no photo stops in that part.

Great way to stretch your legs and see the coast. We completed a whale watch tour and rather travel to town on the bus we walked. We saw lots of seals and bird life. Stopped for seafood and ice cream during the journey.

I did the cliff top walk, taking my time over a couple of hours to enjoy the stunning views. At low tide you can walk along the beach, but in places you can be so close to the seals that you unwittingly disturb them.

Walked from our B&B. Well signposted walk. Up close to seals. Great views out over the bay. Took two hours to complete the circuit.

We walked along the cliff-top to South Bay and (following instructions in a guide-book) returned along the beach. However, be warned that when the tide comes in there is little room to manoeuvre around the seals protecting their positions on the rocks and we had some scary moments! To be fair, we should have observed the warning signs on the beach!
