Located 20-25km north of Kaikura on the left side of the highway (away from the water). Take an easy 7-10min climb alongside a mountain stream to a lagoon at the bottom of a beautiful waterfall. There you will find a many a 20-30 seal pups cavorting in this freshwater lagoon, protected from their predators in the ocean until they mature.

We have been here a number of times and it is nature at its best. This isnt a manmade exhibit, but a place where seal pups congregate while mums are out fishing. If you go at peak times there can be hundreds and hundreds of seal pups. Walking up the track I nearly tripped over one. You have to keep an eye on your surroundings as they look cute and cuddly, but could defend themselves with a bite if they had too. It is so fun to watch them trying to claim king of the rock. Or twirl and dive in the pool. There are sometimes so many pups the water looks like it is bubbling with them. They are very inquisite. Keep your distance so that it can be enjoyed for everyone and the seals dont feel threatened in their own environment. And its free!

We were very lucky as we were there when there were at least 30 seal pups were seen frolicking at the waterfall.

This is a short walk along the stream upto the waterfall and starts from the edge of the road. It is really amazing to see the seal pups play in the waterfal pool. You can easily spend an hour there.

Since our first trip to New Zealand four years ago, my daughter has been obsessed with seals. So we had to return to this gorgeous place. We were driving north to Blenheim to check out the wineries and stopped on the way up and then again on the way back. Both times there were about 20 seal pups playing in the pool. There's a lovely waterfall there, but that fades into insignificance when you watch the antics of the seals. They play just like puppies - rolling and leaping on each other. Of course you are not to touch, but my daughter sat still on a rock and many of the pups came out of the water to sniff her. They seemed to sense she is a child. At this time of the year the pups are being weaned, so when we returned in the afternoon some pups were coming in from the surf and making their way up the stream. Hard to tear ourselves away!
