After a long walk over over the hill from the seal colony to South Bay and back, the Seafood BBQ was a welcome treat, the whitebait patties and scallops were most welcome after such a long walk. Only the gulls were a bit annoying

We went there for the cray fish which seems to be on everyones wish list in Kaikoura. We wanted to check what the hype about and went to the kiosk. You get comparitively reasonably proced cray fish. And cray fish is nothing but a lobster. We went when it was about to close and didnt get variety in food. But food was decent enough and we shared table with a French couple from Tahiti.

We surely checked the cray fish experience box.

The first sign of trouble was the cook reaching into the cooler box to ask me which (pre-cooked) crayfish I wanted. Seafood is best when it is cooked fresh, not, when it's made hours earlier and then stuff into a cooler. The scallops are cooked fresh, but, don't taste good, and the mussels are pre-cooked as well. This place is riding on it's reputation as a "seafood shack" but at the prices they charge, and the poor quality of food, I would suggest that you take your money and your appetite and go to Green Dolphin. Slightly more expensive, but, far better food.

Roadside kiosk with picnic type tables.

The owner was not having a good day and was reluctant to answer any questions. Ordered scallops and of course crayfish.

The scallops were extremely small, smaller than bay scallops, but pretty tasty.

The Crayfish which was $54 was cooked tough and dry. I was pretty disappointed.

Even though some say this is cheaper than some of the proper restaurants in town, its the old story, you get what yo pay for.

Don't waste your money here.
