This was an average hostel, with the good standards that I would expect for the price of the room. Great location if you arrive by bus as the hostel is directly opposite the bus stop. Well equipped and tidy kitchen. Showers were pretty basic. Roughly a 20 minute walk to go on one of the whalewatching tours, which is well worth doing.

This place was good, the owner was kind and it was right in town. Lots of nice people to meet and the facilities are clean and workable. The toilets had some trouble while I was here unfortunately and I couldn't find the herb garden, but that's the only bad thing I have to say. The outdoor porch was really nice in the evenings and the common room was a great place to hang out. Lots of interesting murals on the walls and ceilings too.

This hostel is one of the best hostels in Kaikoura. It was clean and tidy and conveniently located right in front of the I-site. There was a small and cosy lounge with an outdoor area overlooking the main street. During peak periods when everyone starts cooking their meals, the kitchen is too small and the number of utensils are insufficient. The same goes for the lounge. There was an excellent atmosphere for travellers to meet and get to know one another.

Hostel is somewhat like a vacuum. Given room 5, which was separated from the kitchen by a wall and also along the corridor to the lounge. If you do not join in the big community of travellers, and just stay in the room, you will enjoy a surround sound of conversation from the kitchen and the lounge. Other rooms on the 1st floor 1-4 are also located in the same corridor and if there are many chilling out in the lounge, sleep will be a problem until the wee hours of the night when everyone goes to bed.

If you want to have a good night sleep, recommend you get a room on the ground floor which is away from the lounge and kitchen.

Will stay again, but will request for room on ground floor.

I stayed here for one night as part of an organised tour in January 2013. It's a lovely, small hostel with good facilities and very well located on the main street of Kaikoura,

The dorm rooms have wooden bunk beds so they are nice and solid, and the beds are comfortable. Rooms are clean but contain no lockers. There's a small-ish kitchen, but appropriate for the size of the hostel, with plenty of fridge space. The bathrooms seemed clean, although they are unisex and there are three toilets and three showers. The common room is large and has a nice view of the main street and beyond it, the water.

I would recommend staying here (especially if your other option is the Adelphi!)

The lodge was our first proper accommodation in a 15 day trip around the South Island. We arrived late from Akaroa at close to 9pm, and the guy was waiting out front expecting us, which was kinda cool. The place was clean, well furnished, adequate clean bathrooms, and has a fully equipped kitchen. No free wifi available though. Nothing fancy...but then again for $29pp there's nothing significant you could complain about the place.
We were given a 4-bed room and a 3-bed room. Space in the rooms was quite limited, and the beds/pillows were kinda soft, but we came to realize that's just the way it is in NZ (the soft bedding I mean).
The best thing about the place has to be its location: right on Main Street, with the iSite just across the road. Parking is free at the carpark across cos the meters don't work, and there's food options just minutes' walk away.
The staff gave us an awesome recommendation for dinner (The Green Dolphin) and was extremely helpful. 3.5 star for the stay, an extra 0.5 for the friendly staff!

I loved this place. It had a great vibe and a good theme with cool fishy decorations everywhere. The lounge area was really nice and comfortable with plenty of sitting space, books, games, big TV and a balcony with a great view. The kitchen was nice, rooms were clean with fairly decent beds for a hostel. Service was good, the guy who runs the place is very chilled out and easy to talk to. It's in a great location. Nothing to complain about really!

I stayed at the hostel as part of an organised tour around the top of the South Island. We were allocated a decent sized room on the first floor, and found the room ok, with decent beds. It is like many backpackers hostels, and therefore what was on offer was in line with my expectations.

The hostel is well located, right in the centre of the Main Street, and the staff were helpful.
