“Great atmosphere, loved it”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

I loved this place. It had a great vibe and a good theme with cool fishy decorations everywhere. The lounge area was really nice and comfortable with plenty of sitting space, books, games, big TV and a balcony with a great view. The kitchen was nice, rooms were clean with fairly decent beds for a hostel. Service was good, the guy who runs the place is very chilled out and easy to talk to. It's in a great location. Nothing to complain about really!

I stayed at the hostel as part of an organised tour around the top of the South Island. We were allocated a decent sized room on the first floor, and found the room ok, with decent beds. It is like many backpackers hostels, and therefore what was on offer was in line with my expectations.

The hostel is well located, right in the centre of the Main Street, and the staff were helpful.

This place is definitely one of the more creative hostels I have stayed at. Handy location in the centre of town. The hostel staff were really friendly and gave us plenty of tips about what to see. When we had a sudden change of plans they were nice enough to let us keep our luggage at the hostel after check-out. In general, Kaikoura was a highlight of our trip. Step outside the hostel into pure NZ glory!

Spent a night here with my wife and found the room to be ok (although somewhat tired and dusty) but the bed was comfortable enough. Shared showers were nice and hot and even though we didn't use the kitchen facilities, they looked to be a good size with all the facilities needed. Right in the centre of Kaikoura town, so well based for the restaurants and bars.

We stayed in a four-bedroom dorm on January 3rd 2013. We stayed in the room RIGHT by the reception. Forget about having a sleep in, you will be woken up early! By people checking in/out but also by the loud music that was blasted over the loud speakers. The rooms are not sound-proof at all, we could also hear everything going on upstairs in the room above during the night.

Cons: The kitchen was TINY, and probably one of the yuckiest kitchens i've seen at a hostel. The communal lounge was ok, but everything seemed a bit dated and unclean. The bathrooms were pretty gross. Lots of little things that added up - never any paper towels in the bathrooms, nowhere to hang your stuff, no fresh tea towels in the kitchen, not enough space in the fridge (which was smelly). I wouldn't recommend this place for families or couples, but would probably be perfectly suitable for younger travellers.

Pros: The guy at reception was super friendly and welcoming - a good friendly kiwi bloke. It seemed like this place was a one-man operation, as I saw him checking in people, making beds, doing washing, everything you name it. So in his defence, considering he managed to all this by himself, and still remain friendly, is incredible. He was also helpful with recommending things to do.

I chose this hostel because I'd read that it was right opposite the Intercity bus stop, which was handy as I had heavy luggage. however, the hostel is also right in the middle of town and just a few minutes' walk from the Isite and everything else you need in Kaikoura.

It's small and friendly, so even if you're on your own - as I was - it's easy to meet people and fit in. I only stayed one night but found the hostel to be well equipped, the staff really helpful and the room clean. The free tea bags made a big difference (I'm from the UK so I need my tea).
