“The best things in life are free”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

We drove through Kaikoura on 18th and again on 20th September on our trip up to Blenheim. This is the second time we have visited Kaikoura and always take the opportunity to stop and watch the seals loll around and the occasional younger one swim around in a pool, they are quite entertaining. You can watch the seals from the Ohau seal viewing platform which gives you the opportunity to see dozens from a good vantage point, or you can drive along the road and pull in at one of the pull ins along the road. On the way back we saw a number of seals asleep on the grass verge at the edge of the beach. If you stop at the Ohau viewing platform it has two information boards which provide interesting facts about seals, which include: never get between a seal and the sea, don't wake sleeping seals and to keep a good distance away as they move fast and their bite is both painful and can cause a bad infection. Seals prefer the large rocky outcrops so you will have a better chance of seeing some if you stop where there are larger rocks.

“Seals pups frolicking and a brisk walk too!”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

A must see at the moment is a small pond/lake just before you arrive at the parking area. Seal pups have found this spot and a short stroll along the board walk and you can watch them frolicking in the water. Up over the hill and walk to South Bay and its a good way to walk off the yummy food to be had at any number of eateries in Kaikoura. A great place to visit.

“We could sit next to the baby seals for hours”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

The colony was really close to our B&B. We first drove up to the parkinglot. Over there most of the adult seals stay and you can really see them up close. After that we took the walkway and watched the baby seals playing in the pond. They are very playfull and watching them is fun. No dislikes here.

“Let sleeping seal lie..”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

It was good to see the resident seal lying peacefully around the rocky promontory that is their colony. It is not so good to see some idiots approach close to the resting giants with dogs to startle them into life. It was good to see the chase that ensued when one of the male seals took a fancy to one of the dogs and pursued it until it jumped over the seawall, allowing its owner to make his escape back to his campervan. Great stuff!
