We drove through Kaikoura on 18th and again on 20th September on our trip up to Blenheim. This is the second time we have visited Kaikoura and always take the opportunity to stop and watch the seals loll around and the occasional younger one swim around in a pool, they are quite entertaining. You can watch the seals from the Ohau seal viewing platform which gives you the opportunity to see dozens from a good vantage point, or you can drive along the road and pull in at one of the pull ins along the road. On the way back we saw a number of seals asleep on the grass verge at the edge of the beach. If you stop at the Ohau viewing platform it has two information boards which provide interesting facts about seals, which include: never get between a seal and the sea, don't wake sleeping seals and to keep a good distance away as they move fast and their bite is both painful and can cause a bad infection. Seals prefer the large rocky outcrops so you will have a better chance of seeing some if you stop where there are larger rocks.
