“Delightful views of seals chilling out!”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Just so wonderful to see large numbers of seals chilling out on and around the rocks along the shore line. Just so great to see and listen to their grumbles!

“A must see”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Easy to access. Relatively easy to walk around at low tide. Extremely good chance of seeing seals up close. We went to a colony on the west coast and couldn't get anywhere near as close as the Kaikoura colony.

“Great Show of Nature”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

This is located at a rocky part of the beach on the road to Kaikoura opposite the entrance to the Ohau Waterfall Walk so it is very easy to see both. We navigated ourselves across the rocks to get a close up view of the seals and to take some great photo's in their natural environment. At the time of our visit there were literally dozens of seals sunbathing on the rocks rangeing from full grown males to pups. It really was a delightful experience and would highly recommend it to anyone. One word of warning, be very careful when clambering over the rocks, they are quite lose in places and it is easy to turn an ankle if you are not careful and of course don't get too close to the seals, they can be very protective of their pups and they do bite.

“An Excellent Place to Visit”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

The Point Keen Seal Colony is a good place to have an 'up close and personal' experience with the seals. There is plenty of parking and always plenty of seals to see. The rock pools, which are easily accessible at low tide, are a very good place for children to investigate the little sea creatures.
The Kaikoura Lions Club has enhanced the area by placing seats at various places along the foreshore and by the colony.
The walk over the peninsula which can be accessed from the car park is easy once you have climbed up the hill to the path, and fantastic views of the area reward all those who take this walk.
