“Delicious Crayfish”
Reviewed February 27, 2014 via mobile

As Kaikoura means crayfish meal we thought that we had better have one. We tried the smart place over the road but it was full. We had the last table at the Pier. We just had half a crayfish each with chips and salad. Delicious! At $45 each we thought good value - you would have to pay much more in the UK. The place is old worldly and unpretentious. The staff were friendly and courteous. After we came in, a lot of others tried to get tables. So if you want to eat there in the evening, best to book!

“Good seafood”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

Good seafood though the coconut sauce with the clams was a bit overwhelming. They did have some nice picnic tables on the lawn facing the ocean which could be nice during the day, though the evenings were too cold.

“The Pier Restaurant”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

There were no tables, so we sat at "counter" in front of the windows. Best seats in the house...beautiful views of the water. Shared the seafood chowder and the crayfish. The food was very good...the crayfish very expensive.

Service was good, views terrific!

“Thoroughly Enjoyed Mussels and Fish and Chips”
Reviewed February 17, 2014

Contrary to a previous review, we (and a friend) found the HUGE mussels with their sauce to be wonderful with a light dill flavor. And I found the fish and chips to be delicious, although not the very best I have had. I generally don't like fish and chips because the batter is to thick and the fish not fresh, but that was not the case here. Perhaps there was a different cook that day that reviewer attended?
The service was pleasant, although the servers seemed a bit rushed. We weren't in any hurry however. My only suggestion would be to refinish the outdoor picnic tables as they are not very appealing to eat on. Or perhaps add placemats so you are not directly eating on the table.

“Fabulous fresh seafood”
Reviewed February 13, 2014

Fabulous fresh seafood, generous portions, amazing view - what's not to like? We have never been disappointed with lunch at the Pier. The only perplexing point is why this place is not busier.
