“Wonderful stay.”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

The Kaikoura Boutique Hotel is a wonderful little spot. We really enjoyed Kaikoura in general. The hotel is located in the perfect spot on the ocean, walking distance to the main city center. The rooms are small but more than adequate. The furnishings are new, and there is a french press in the room for morning coffee which is quite a step up from the typical instant coffee. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this spot to anyone.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Kaikoura Boutique Hotel. The reception was excellent and the room was new and tastefully furnished. Not very large, but was quiet, comfortsble and well equipped. Dinner was also very good with a good selection of wines. Overall, this was one of the best experiences in my travels around the South Island. Highly recommended.

After spending a few days in Christchurch with my partners family, we travelled up to Kaikoura on the pacific coastal train, and caught the shuttle bus to the Kaikoura Boutique Hotel. The couple that own the hotel are doing a beautiful job of renovating it. They are super friendly and helpful and gave us a great tip on where to find cheap crayfish!

The hotel is about a half hour walk to the whale watch and railway station but is easily done if you allow the time for it.

All in all a great stay and we would happily return!

Room Tip: Choose a large courtyard room

We really enjoyed our stay here, the hotel's the former general store and is being lovingly restored by the owners. It has a wonderful charm all the other motels don't have. The 6 rooms are all based around a central courtyard, and yes the rooms are smaller than most but they are tastefully decorated and are big enough.
Very friendly staff and owners only add to the charm.

There is free Internet access up to a certain download limit which was ok but I would have liked more.

Breast was a very good experience and at under $20 per person it was good value

Extremely friendly hosts and housekeeper. Room very small, clean, nicely furnished but lacked some basic equipment. When we asked for additional equipment e.g. toaster we received one immediately. Majority of rooms built around a courtyard behind the main building. Main building overlooks the sea and contains an restaurant. Limited sea view from our room. As the room was small we didn't feel it was good value for money.

The owners were super helpful and very friendly and nothing seems too much trouble for the staff. The rooms were really tastefully decorated but pay the extra and get the larger room as the standard rooms are tiny and bathroom is equally tiny. rooms have one window over the bed so it is either fresh Air or privacy.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are to small

I stayed at Kaikoura Boutique Hotel after I went from Christchurch to Kaikoura by railway. The location is in front of sea and is close to town centre. I am Japanese and I cannot speak English very well. But the hotel's man was very kind, friendly and helpful, so I really enjoyed Kaikoura. It's not only Whale Watch, but Seal Colony Watch and so on. I want to go to Kaikoura again and stay at this hotel again.
