Kaikoura is a wonderful place for wildlife and amazing scenery. Most people visit for the whale watching as part of their South Island tour. Consequently a lot of the hospitality businesses in the area do not go that extra mile for the repeat and word of mouth business.

We stayed in the motel units. They were acceptable and clean but the decor was drab and functional. The twin and double rooms were on the ground floor and the family rooms were located above. This meant that for several hours every evening we had a chorus of tap dancing elephants when the kids were running around. Plus the whole building shook when they were running up and down the steps. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the kids because that's what kids do and it perfectly acceptable behavior. The layout would be more suited the opposite way round with the family rooms on the ground floor and the double and twin rooms upstairs. The room had no outside seating space and was on the main thoroughfare to most of the parks amenities. Within the park there are some cheaper single story units with an outside picnic table that would have been more suitable for us.

For a family, this would be a fantastic place to stay with lots to do for the kids where they can safely run free so I would recommend, but I would not for couples.

We chose this place because of the spa pools but again they were monopolised by the many children so we really didn't get much of a chance to use them.

I would highly recommend the whale watching trip and the kayaking with the fur seals. We tried several restaurants, the only ones worth a mention were the Hislop Cafe where the food and service was amazing. The Beach House Cafe did an excellent breakfast. We tried several places on the main high street in Kaikoura, but the service and microwaved food was poor. The Beach Road end of town places worked much harder and offered an excellent customer service experience.

We also found another little treasure during our stay. If you walk or cycle just past the old pier, there is a seafood barbeque run by two friendly local women that does the best priced crayfish in town set amongst breath taking scenery.

We stayed in one of the 2 bedroom motel rooms. They were modern & spacious with well equipped kitchens. The shower had the best water pressure I have ever had! The park is quiet, has heated outdoor spas & a pool, & isn't far from the centre of town.

I camped here recently, and was very impressed. Really spacious clean bathrooms and amazing showers! Super powerful, just how I like them. Kitchen got quite busy at night but had a really nice atmosphere. Its actually really easy to walk into town from the park as well, which I was suprised about. Overall I found it a really pleasant place to stay with nice views of the mountian ranges too.

Please note; Kaikoura and Milford Sound are approximately 1000 kms (600 miles) apart. It takes approx 12 hours (non stop) to drive from one to the other. Although I have never never stayed at Alpine-Pacific Holiday Park I am sure it is a nice place (please refer to other reviews) but the park is in Kaikoura NOT Milford Sound!

We stayed in a studio unit for two nights recently and found both the unit and the holiday park to be excellent! Our unit was large, well fitted and ultra clean, bed was comfy and the park was quiet at night. The facilities on the park were really good - very clean and well maintained pool and spas, great BBQ area and communual kitchen. Friendly staff and warm welcome.

Only negative was the expensive internet access, but everything else was great. Would definitly recommend!
