“Excellent hostel clean warm confortable and very friendly”
Reviewed December 9, 2010

I had a brilliant 3 nights staying in this lovely hostel. The rooms were clean and quiet. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. I was picked up as promised off the bus in town and made to feel at home with free coffee, tea and hot choc available in the spacious kitchen . There was also a most useful shelf of herbs/spices from the garden and sauces that guests'' had left behind which saved buying everything which i thought very useful. i really loved that they recycled absolutely everything too. Top spot to visit. definitely recommend this hostel and the dolphin swim which leaves from just around the corner which is much appreciated if you have a 5am swim!

This place is a vibe magnet! After being bombarded with extreme adventure tours...it was nice to get back to why I went traveling...the peeps! This hostel was cozy and authentic with great hot water pressure. They have a large group kitchen, a reading area, available guitars, AN ART CENTER, free tea (coffee and hot chocolate) and free use of cruising bikes. The Internet is a little pricey but you're a dumbtard to be on the Internet in such a inviting and warm hostel surrounded by stunning mountains and breath-taking beaches (full of whales, seals and dolphins!) Curses to you, Albatross hostel...I had planned on only staying for a day...but I didn't stand a chance against your warm hospitality and I ended up staying for almost a week--hee hee. The staff (Ben & Katie) were genuinely kind, helpful, and witty while still being professional. At times there were group meals... at times there were ukulele jams but at all times there was a cozy vibe. I have spent 2 weeks in NZ and this location was by far the most beautiful with this being my favorite hostel too. A win-win I tell you. Blah, blah Nelson, picton, blenheim--get your backpacker rump to panoramic kaikoura and reward yourself with some well deserved R&R at the Albatross. I loved it here. The place was clean and tidy with friendly staff who were happy to relax with the guests and just chat. Guitars on hand for those so inclined (not me nor anyone else thankfully) but lots of games, chilled out chat and spot of painting if you want. Kaikora is full of nice things to do, especially the dolphin swim, and they are happy to arrange all activities for you. Free cake, tea and bikes if you are that way inclined. Just a jolly good place to relax and spend time with kind friendly people.

The owners were young and had travelling experience and that came across withing in their ownership of the hostel. The rooms were clean and so were the showers. The communal areas were relaxed and so were able to chat to other travellers. The owners invited everyone to the local pub quiz which was good fun. The owners also had good knowledge of Kaikoura.

Chose this backpacker inn on my first month long trip of NZ. Only stayed the 2 nights and more than enough. Picked off internet from list of Kaikoura accommodation, as was the first listed beginning with an "A", was cheap by NZ standards and had stated to have previously won awards. Had my own room , but this was no more than a small grubby box with rickety metal framed bunk and a plastic item for a desk/table. Building itself is of historic interest, the communal lounge is quite large and staff friendly but nothing else in its favour. When I asked confirmation of directions at I-Site on arrival, the response received should have warned me of what to expect. Throughout my 2 nights, I did not manage a shower because of a heater fault with no hot water, although it was only the one morning that I had to shave in cold water. Kaikoura is a lovely place to stay. It is small with an abundance of backpaker accommodation , but few places offerring rooms otherwise. Make sure you first study the reviews carefully and do not pay using your credit card if you wish the details to remain secure. Would not stay at this inn again even if free.

We spent the last night of the decade here but avoided the parties as we had an early start for dolphin swimming the next morning. The staff and ethics of the hostel are great, no hippie-ness but just good thinking. The bad thing about are particular room, twin room with bunk beds, was the location right next door to a noisy shower and toilet flushing system. Coupled with very old mattresses that sank in the middle made for not a great night's sleep. However, the staff, access to a great kitchen and facilities, with phone, internet and lovely meeting area was great. Don't be put of the mattresses as the rest of the hostel makes up for this. Those with bad backs should avoid, unfortunately.
