“Great Experience with friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2011

Wanted to try something different with kids so they could experience something outside of Urban life. It was a great experience and took me back to my childhood days never mind the kids! Animals are great and kids can really interact with them, free breakfast was enjoyed and staff couldnt do enough to make us feel welcome and enjoy the whole time we were there. If you want to get the kids back to basics and enjoy nature and animals then I recommend a stay at Cushchine cottage, Kaikoura, New zealand. You have to remember what this is. A trip out into the rugged wilderness and an experience to let the kids see nature at it's most innocent and best. They enjoyed the Llama trekking the most. Thanks for a great time and memories. Would recommend definately!

“fully satisfied”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2010

4 ladies from Hong Kong went to NZ 20nov -30nov 2010, we have read many reviews on tripadvisor when choosing our accomadtion b4 going. We wanted a farmstay after swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura~ and we found this Cushchine Cottage is nearly the only choice for 4 of us...even the below comment was so bad but we still go for it and it turned out to be really good! we have stayed in other nice motels in Blenheim the night before and in Christchurch, Oamaru, Wanaka, Queenstown etc afterwards. And we've been living in 5star hotels in many places around the world. we are tired of the city life and this farmstay is really what we wanted! It's frankly a bit old fashion and a bit rustic but the beds are not so bad~ we all had a good sleep! Hand feeding animals are great especially the kunekune pig and wallaby, my fav.!
only one disadvantage is it didnt provide wi-fi or internet.....but it's a FARM!! what more can you expected?!

“self-catering accommodation and petting farm”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2010

On our three week trip of the South Island in January 2009 this was by far the worst accommodation we stayed in. The bedding was shocking and everything including the animals, and even the owners was a bit sad and worn out. While I appreciate that might have changed we would never recommend anybody stay here.

“Lots of caractere but in desperate need of love”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2010

April 2010 - We stayed there with a young family of 3 kids under 5. The experience is the best for young children and they had a ball playing and feeding all the animals on the paddock. The crew is made out of young backpackers in the search of money and work, and the owners appeared friendly.

But the place is running down and I wouldn`t recommend anyone to stay there, especially at the cottage.

If you pass the average cleaning of the place, it is a running down little cottage that is somewhat collapsing in certain parts (floor) or going in diagonals. For 200NZD a night, the matresses were old and really uncomfortable, and smelled of mould and various wet odors...

This is definitely a rip off if you consider staying on site. The farm and the concept are great, but the place in general needs a good clean and TLC.
Worth taking the kids for a poney ride though, but choose a different accomodation if you wanna rest correctly.

“Animals are fab, cottage needs some love”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2010

First thing to say is that our daughter thought that this was paradise on earth. The benefit of staying on the farm cottage is that we awoke each morning to help feed the farm animals - literally hand-feeding the wallaby, emu, pigs, rabbits, deer, donkeys, alpaca and so on. This was a unique experience for us city-folk and made our trip to Kaikoura extra special (the whales and seals were the original draw and fantastic).
Rustic wasn't a problem, but the cracked windows and damp smell were off-putting. Perhaps if the sun had been shining it would have mattered less. The cottage otherwise was spacious and adequate. We know people who have stayed in the cottage in previous years and can't help thinking that there is little investment in maintaining the standards, which is definately needed.
