Owner description: Enjoy the atmosphere of an original shearing shed. The show consists of hand feeding our drysdale Ram ??? Ram-Man??? (who is very photogenic) watching a sheep being shorn, the wool being sorted and pressed. This is followed by a general discussion giving information about sheep shearing, sheep breeds and wool types. Hold a shearing hand piece, old blades shears and Ram horns. During spring you can touch, hold and feed a lamb. Time 30 minutes.

After hiking along the Peninsula loop we stopped by for the 1:30 show. It was fun and informative. The owner obviously knows his stuff and I learned a lot about wool's history. He answered all our questions and was really friendly. It doesn't take long and it's reasonably priced. I would recommend it if you have a flexible schedule and can make one of the shows.

For a few dollars you get to have great opportunity for taking pictures with farm animals.
You also get to take back with you the information about farming in NZ.

The owners of the farm are friendly and I believe you would not be disappointed if you have not seen such show before.

Check about the timing of the shows before heading there.

The show takes place on a working farm. A great show for families - very interactive as we got to hold a lamb born just the night before, fed the resident ram, and saw a sheep shearing demonstration. The commentary was interesting, entertaining and gives great insight into NZ's wool industry - fun for children and adutls. We also met a very friendly working dog on the farm!

With it being August and low season, a few of the other South Island 'Sheep Shearing Shows' had been closed when we had passed. With Kaikoura being one of our last stops we phoned ahead to check they were still running - fortunately it was. The show was about 40 minutes long, and a great experience. We saw RamMan - a huge Ram with curly horns and were able to feed him and feel his wool. A Drysdale sheep was then chosen by Peter and shorn infront of us - it made you realise what a physical kind of job sheep shearing is! Peter answered all our questions and went through the different wool qualities. Also the prices that wool merchants pay for wool (not much.....).
As a merino wearing person myself, it was great to see where the product originated. I also fulfilled a lifetime dream of holding a day old baby lamb - seemed to be all legs!

We were supposed to go swimming with dolphins that morning, but because it was so windy, the water was very choppy and they had to cancel the 8AM and noon excursions, which was a huge bummer because we had booked it several months in advance and it was one of the most anticipated activities of our trip. Where else in the world can you swim with dolphins in the open ocean? Anywhere near Los Angeles? So with a free morning, we were lucky enough to discover the sheep shearing show at The Point. Once again, this was another one of those activities that you have to wonder if you will ever get a chance to do again in your life. You were able to feed a baby lamb with a bottle of milk. I got the chance to hold another young lamb and then hand feed an adult male ram, which was pretty cool. We learned all about different wool types, sheep breeds and sheering techniques from the owner, and last but not least we got to witness a full traditional sheep shearing in his shearing shed for all of $10 per person. So we missed out on swimming with dolphins the only morning that we were in Kaikoura, but this was a cheap and fun learning experience that I’d definitely recommend.
