Owner description: Welcome to The National Kiwi Centre The National Kiwi Centre is situated in the heart of Hokitika in an undercover facility that provides viewing of kiwi in our nocturnal house that replicates their natural environment. During your visit you can take part in feeding the giant eels (10am, 12 noon and 3pm daily). The eels are approximately 85 to 100 years old. After the Eel feedings you can see the Kiwi being feed. view the tuatara, New Zealands oldest living dinosaur. Try your hand at catch and release crawly fishing fun for all ages . We have lots of other fish and creatures to look at. And it's all inside so no getting wet on that rainy day

These people went out of their way to look after us. They gave us personal attention and knew what they were talking about. The kiwi encounter was special and the eels were something you dont get to see anywhere else. We liked it as it was not the tourist hype you often get elsewhere and the people seemed keen to get to know you.

Building and amenities are dated and need sprucing up. But seeing a real kiwi kinda makes up for it. However it is quite pricey

We stumbled across this place by accident while touring NZ, the kids really wanted to see a kiwi! It promised a lot and the staff really were trying to do their best and the lady that did the eel feed and talk was excellent and passionate about her eels HOWEVER I dont want to be scathing because the best thing that could happen would be that tourists supported this place and it flourished BUT you cant charge full price admission and have 50% of the enclosures/tanks empty, sadly it was old, shabby and neglected and only that the eel encounter was so good due to the the lady keepers efforts I would have felt ripped off. Sorry National Kiwi Centre!
