Lovely place - nothing in the room said, 'let's save a few cents by upsetting our guests'. Warm, stylish, overlooking the sometimes-awesome Tasman and the bed was just right. Heated bathroom tiles, a short walk to the best pizza in NZ at Fat Pipi, and quiet save for the crashing surf. Really quite nice.

Our agent booked this hotel as part of our tour of South island. On looking at the web site we were quite satisfied with what we thought we were getting, but if we had looked more closely we would have seen that the Driftwood rooms are tucked away down the side of the hotel and not as the main photo suggests. The room was very basic and dated but it was clean and had all necessities. When we questioned our booking the staff were sympathetic but could not offer us another room as they were full. We didn`t let it spoil our two enjoyable days in Hokitika, but we have learnt to study websites more carefully!

There isn’t much in cute little Hokitika, so the Beachfront Hotel (located – you guessed it – on the beachfront) is easy to locate if you drive into the main part of town and head towards the ocean. The hotel layout is a bit odd—the reception desk can be reached through an alley off the main road, or by driving around back in either direction, and the accommodations are spread throughout several buildings that are oddly connected, with several separate parking options as well. We upgraded to a top floor room so as to have a view of the ocean, which would have been quite nice to enjoy from the balcony if not for the rain. Our room was large with plenty of luggage space and a minifridge, which was great as the motel is directly beside a liquor store and across from a grocery market, where we stocked up. The room style wasn't my favorite, but at least the furniture appeared newer. And the bathroom was definitely very nice and modern. We never could quite figure out how to get the heat on in the room, so had to stuff a towel underneath the door to keep out the massive cold draft coming from the hallway, which thankfully worked. Also, the staff kindly provided two hours of free wifi, although there was a posted fee for this.

My primary complaint about the Beachfront was noise-- the room next door became occupied with several people around 1am, and we could hear everything. We contacted the management and the group did settle down a bit, but the rooms are not insulated enough to effectively muffle louder voices. Also, the whipping wind through the large hallway vents (a serious design flaw!) made an intermittent vibrating noise that was annoying, although nothing could be done about it given the fairly stormy conditions.

We really enjoyed our stay in a beachfront room and loved the sound of the ocean and being able to watch the waves crashing on the beach from the bed. The room was on the 2nd floor with a small balcony overlooking a quiet road and out over the beach/sea. It was extremely quiet despite the small road outside. The room was clean and comfortable and I loved the cushions and colour theme! As well as the quality of the sheets which were yummy!

The walk-in shower was very spacious (great if you want to share) and the pressure was great. Just a bit odd that there wasn't anywhere to hold soap etc. It was also odd that there was a heated towel rail but no way of turning it on/off. It was off during our stay and it wasn't exactly summertime.

The only negative was our food in the dining room. Whilst we only had entrees we were both disappointed in the quality, especially as reception had said what great food it was. The service was also somewhat lacking, but i think it might've been because they were understaffed and therefore a little stressed even though the dining room wasn't full. The dining room was also lacking in 'ambience' but at least it was well heated - too well as we were seated right next to the heater and had to turn it down!

The location is great, central in town so you can walk to everything (the supermarket is just across the road) and of course the beach is on the other side. Also very reasonably priced. I would definitely stay again if I was passing through.

Stayed here for one night and stayed in a ocean view room on the ground floor in the newer wing. This room was generous in size, had a great bathroom with shower over bath and had a view of the sea. I was a little nervous before arrival having read a few other reviews but my experience was great. Sure the beach road is in front of the hotel but it is a very quiet road with virtually no traffic. I would deffinately stay in this hotel again. Oh...and the shower was amazing!

Room Tip: Only stay in the new wing. I think it is could driftwood?

We stayed in the Ocean View Wing (don't be put off by the exterior view by the carpark) There are magnificent views of the ocean which is directly opposite the hotel. There was a little balcony where we sat & enjoyed a coffee while soaking up the atmosphere & listening to the sea sounds. Our room was spacious, beautifully furnished & very comfortable. This was quality all the way. Staff were very helpful & friendly & we enjoyed a great dinner & amazing breakfast in the restaurant. Just wish we could have stayed longer
