Very scenic/photogenic. BUT you definitely need to be brave to walk over the bridge because it wobbles like mad.

Unfortunately as it was raining and coming into Autumn when we visited we did not witness the gorgeous turquoise water as seen in photos. The water was an opaque grey colour, but was still beautiful. The swinging bridge was a particularly good attraction.

it's an easy drive and an easy walk to get to one of the most beautiful colors your eyes will ever see. from my limited experience with "rock flour blue" water... it seems that viewing it when the sun is out is best for optimal color. also, it seems that sandflies are attracted to the rock flour, so be sure to put on bug repellent before you get out of the car. the repellent is especially helpful if you cross the bridge and walk down to the shore of the river (only adds a minute to the walk and is neat). enjoy :)

This was the highlight of our trip to Hokitika. The Gorge is 33 kms from Hokitika through lovely farmland. It was well worth the drive. The gorge itself is just gorgous. There is a lovely bush walk (approx 10 minutes) from the carpark to the swing bridge with glimpes of the water along the way. It is just stunning! The water is such a gorgeous turquoise blue, I've never seen anywhere else quite like it. Once on the other side of the swing bridge there is a track down to the rocks and the waters edge. I would recommend insect repellent if you are going down to the water.

The Hokitika Gorge is absolutely stunning. The track to it has been upgraded to make it very easy for anyone with good mobility. The swing bridge over the gorge is fun to cross and is great to photograph. The water is an unreal turquoise color.
