Hokitika Gorge is a 30 minute drive from Hokitika town centre. We were driving down from Franz Josef to Greymouth and decided to take a de-tour to visit the Gorge after seeing a picture of the Gorge. The drive itself was smooth from the town center with some confusion when the road diverged in between and the GPS was not helpful. But then from then on the road was well marked and didn't face any problem in reaching the Gorge.
When we reached the car park we were the only visitors and we missed the real walk and went through the service road - had to climb uphill, but it was a scenic walk. If one were to take the walking track, in the first 3-4 minutes, you will have the first look out point. In around 7-8 minutes, you will reach the small hanging bridge. The view from the Bridge is unbelievable - I have never seen such a vibrant color in a gorge ever before. From the bridge another 2 minute walk lead you the rock edge above the water. The scenery is lovely with calm and serene surroundings. Also, as with other attractions in NZ there is no crowd or commotion and the place guarantees utmost peace in the most scenic settings.
As the gorge is 30 km from the town center many people give this a miss - but please do make it a point to visit the Gorge if you have time. It is really worth the drive!
