“Friendly owners, clean room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2013

Nice, clean room, friendly owner and son team. The three of us had a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, but no pots. There is no lobby, the owner greets guests at the pub/restaurant. Did not eat there. Bought food at the supermarket that is a few min drive north. So if coming from north and want to buy groceries, do it before you reach the motel.

Greymouth turned out to match its name with some really grey wet and cold weather but in fact it's situated at the mouth of the Grey river and has a history of gold prospecting before the turn of the last century. The motel used to be a 'hotel' or watering hole for gold miners since the early days and has been owned by the present family for the last 50 years.
The rooms are adequate and there are kitchen facilities as well. The dinner was not a success with us although the salad provided with it was excellent. Nevertheless, a comfortable stay and a walk by the nearby beach which was memorable.

Travelling as two couples, we had a two bedroom unit in the older section for one night, with bathroom shared between, so not very private. A bit shabby, little lounge space, out of date items in the mini bar. The adjoining hotel has been updated and provides reasonable meals but there are no other facilities in the vicinity apart from a small grocery shop. We had a warm welcome, good WiFi, and, overall, this was a reasonable place for a cheap stopover on the drive down to the glaciers.

Greymouth Rotary club enjoyed a set meal in a room off the usual dining area. The other diners had a varied menu which from past experience is great value for money. The food offered to the club was of excellent quality and at a price members were happy to pay.The facility provided for us was just right for meeting purposes with good audio visual equipment. The club has now negotiated this as our permanent meeting venue. I have never experienced the accommodation but cannot see that the standard would be any less than the bar or restaurant. The location means it is going to be a good spot to stop for people doing the cycle trail and it is very close to the beach and not too far out of Greymouth forbthose who need to shop.

We didn't stay but we did have a most excellent meal at the Paroa Hotel tonight. The food and the service were outstanding.
Thank you so much, we will most certainly be back. Great wine list too. Cheers

Stayed one night on a South Island road trip, loved it, friendly welcoming service, large clean comfortable room, nice meal and relaxed atmosphere, the locals eat at the resturant too so has a local vibe. Close to the beach for a after dinner walk with a lovely sun set. Just what we needed thank you so much, highly recommended.

Great host. We were in room 7 - a nicely renovated handicap-accessible room. Very spacious with separate lounge and kitchen area - probably the best-equipped of our trip. The handy beach access was a wonderful bonus, and only moments away from a nice bicycle/walking trail. Do plan to have the ribs at the restaurant. It was a little odd to order at the counter and self-serve, but the ribs were huge and delicious. Highly recommend.
