The hotel is very tired. We were originally allocated a room that smelt, was damp and had cracked sanitaryware in the bathroom. We returned to reception to complain (the lady on the desk was very helpful) and were allocated a "Premium" room. This room was adequate, but I would have been disappointed if I had paid extra for the "Premium" service as this would have been the standard I would have expected in the first place.

We will not be returning to the hotel or Greymouth

This hotel had the only rooms available for our arrival by train at noon on the big-in-New Zealand holiday of Easter Monday. Although the hotel is only a few blocks from the train station, they did offer free pick up which was a pleasant surprise since it was pouring rain and our luggage would have been soaked through.

The common rooms are decent, but as noted by others, the guest rooms are quite shabby and musty although seemingly clean enough. There is a restaurant in the hotel which was also appreciated in the rain on a holiday since the rest of Greymouth was closed. This is essentially a decent but lower-end tour bus group hotel in a location that may be essential for your itinerary.

Don’t be fooled by the nice looking public areas downstairs because the bedrooms are in need of upgrading from the time you see your room door, and our room was a 'Superior room'. It did seem the best of the bunch as far as hotels are concerned in the area. In the nice looking restaurant, only 4-5 people were seen eating there, everyone else had seemingly gone out. Breakfast extra at $16. Internet available in your room if you have a laptop. Greymouth is not particularly inviting, not one of NZ's best locations. We did stay at another Kingsgate in NZ, and found the same conditions there.

We arrived in Greymouth on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Like many post industrial towns Greymouth has seen better days as had the Kingsgate Hotel. Without the sun one's mood might have suffered a serious decline into depression. The hotel seems to have been built in the seventies and nothing much has been done to it since. Having said that, the hotel was clean and the staff, as always in New Zealand, friendly. What's more, the overnight stay was extremely good value for money. This is a hotel for a convenient overnight stop and that's it.

We stayed at the Kingsgate hotel for one night and weren't that impressed. There are rooms in an annex and in the main hotel, we were put out in the annex and the rooms were small and so dated, the bed linen was the worst as it looked very old and used. The breakfast was good though.
