Kingsgate Hotel Greymouth
Ranked #17 of 19 Hotels in Greymouth
Reviewed January 13, 2009

We arrived on a very wet afternoon having already booked in another establishment which did not have a lift. Unfortunately one of our party had a medical condition and this accomodation was unsuitable. One of us had to try and look for other accomodation and found Kingsgate Hotel. The Front of Desk person was most helpful giving a special deal and looked after some baggage until the rest of the luggage was collected from outside previous establishment. The Restaurant was excellant and the rooms very comfortable.
Recommeded this hotel to a friend and they were also very happy with hotel.

It was raining cats and dogs when we arrived here from the TransAlpine Train. The reception area had towels around the door to stop the water coming in, which gave a bad first impression - things didn't get any better when we got to our rooms. The hotels on the rest of our tour had been excellent, but the bucket on the stairs where the rain was coming through the roof was a bad omen. The room I had was small, smelt damp, and no matter how I tried I couldn't get any hot water through the shower - only into the bath. Having said all this, the restaurant was excellent - one of the best meals we had on the tour.

Rather basic and somewhat tired, but clean and functional. Only stayed one night as we believe most guests do. However the west coast is well worth exploring as the scenery (particularly Pancake Rocks) is stunning.
Staff at hotel were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, especially the Bar Manager who gave us lots of local history and showed us some fascinating old photographs of Greymouth.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our way to Franz Josef. The room was a little dated and not very big, although adequate. We were probably spoiled from previous hotels with larger rooms. Saying that, it was clean and well equipped. We found the staff friendly and helpful, and the hotel restaurant was amazing. The food was delicious and I would recommend it solely for that.
It is centrally located with a good selection of bars etc within easy walking.

We stayed at the Kingsgate for one night in what was described as a superior room in the highrise part of the hotel. This seems to date from the 1960s and is somewhat dated, although I think its the newest part of the hotel. The hotel is very well located in the centre of town. The rooms are a good size but are quite dark, which is not good for Greymouth which isn't the sunniest place in NZ. The bathroom appeared to have been updated very recently and was nice with marble touches. The service in general was pleasant enough.

We stayed at the Kingsgate Hotel as part of a motorcycle tour. We arrived on a cold and rainy day. The front desk help was very gracious, friendly and helpful, the restaurant looked nice and the hallways were welcoming. However, stepping into the room was a shock. Not only was it tired and drab the plaster was hanging off the ceiling, as if the room above had flooded at one time. The service in the restaurant was atrocious. We could tell our waitress definitely did not want to be there. She was rude and very unprofessional. In fact in our month of visiting New Zealand, we only had two hotel stays that I would not recommend to anyone, and this was one of them.

Only stayed in Greymouth for one night, on my way from Christchurch to Fox Glacier. The town doesn't have much going on, to be honest; I think the majority of hotel guests are just passing through on their way somewhere else.

Pros - the staff were friendly; it's pretty centrally located within Greymouth; and it's a perfectly adequate room for the night.

Cons - it just looked really tired and drab. In particular, the decor in my room was just so depressing. And the window in the bathroom wouldn't close properly leading to the room being quite cold. Quite a lot of noise in my ground floor room too, from guests talking in the corridors while walking to and from the restaurant and bar.

The parking is a bit strange - they have a handful of parking spaces right next to the hotel, all of which were occupied. But they do have another carpark further up the road, surrounded by a chain-link fence. But, it's not signposted so I had to find somewhere near the hotel to park, go inside and check in, ask if they had another carpark, get given directions, then go and move my car. Not a massive problem, but not really what you want to be doing after a long drive. This other carpark has its security gate closed at 10 or 11 or something, which is great for security but assumes you won't want to drive anywhere after that time. And I wasn't convinced it was large enough anyway, so chose not to move my car after I'd got somewhere to park it.
