Gloriously positioned above Tiawawe Bay, a couple of hours North of Auckland, with stunning Pacific Ocean views, this is a special spot to spend a few days. It is difficult to classify as it is all-inclusive and that means dinner, bed, breakfast, fishing in Des's boat, kayaking, sightseeing boat trips around the Bay, a 200 kilometre trip for a game of golf, lunch on a secluded beach, any amount of local knowledge and great conversation with a gracious host. Throw in New Zealand and Australian selected wines with dinner as well as beer for Him and G and T for Her as the sun sets, all included in the tariff and...............well, you get the idea.
Des Cogan is a great host and a pretty useful cook. Add to this that we dined on snapper we caught during the day and a lovely lamb roast from Des's farm amongst other delicacies, and that nothing is a problem, and.............well you get the idea.
Des really only caters for one couple at a time, though he said he could look at up to two couples travelling together by accommodating one couple (or a child?) in his house. The accommodation for the couple is a perfectly adequate self-contained studio apartment remote from the main house with the same stunning views. You will be woken every morning by a native Tui or two warbling, whistling and mostly imitating other sounds that have taken their fancy.
We wanted a game of golf, so Des asked if we minded if he joined us, and then drove us the hour drive to Waitangi Golf Club with side trips through native forests and the Bay of Islands and a return trip along the beautiful coastline. He won the golf but was pretty gracious about that as well
Thoroughly recommended for a couple if you want a break in a beautiful place with a gracious host who looks after you very well indeed and has constant little surprises in store................we will be back.
