“Kiwi sighting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

We visited this park , as it is one of the places that has a Native Bird recovery centre and a Kiwi House . Also on this day , they were holding a " Medieval Madness " day ,with Jousting and Music .
Some of the park was not open , but there was still plenty to enjoy . The large and small railway engines were giving rides , the Museum was open , the school , the Hardie house , Smithy and the Clarke Homestead were also open and quite interesting .
However , best of all , we got to see a kiwi in the Kiwi House .Sometimes the Kiwis are sleeping ,but we were told that one was active and we may be lucky to see him .
All in all , a nice day out , nothing fantastic , but a pleasant way to pass a few hours .

“Okay-ish”

A good place to see kiwi birds being fed, friendly staff. Interesting museum. The rest of the park was closed so not much to do. But homestead is nice to walk round.

“Museum and Railway”

Great place to visit. Looking at the Ghekos was great. We were lucky to see the Kiwi's come out to feed. My husband enjoyed the trip on the train and chatting to the volunteers at the station. Recommend a visit.

“Extremely helpful staff and Kiwis! plus a small museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

Many people will just pass Whangarei on their trip but this stop is really worth it. Only 10 min from the main road you actually get two for the price of one.

There is a nice exhibition outside with secveral houses on display as a sort of open air musuem plus a small museum with very interesting exhibit. Nestled into this is a small bird sanctuary where birds are kept before release into the wilderness.

This is all very good to spend some informative (rules for teachers) hour or so if you come in a bit too early for the feeding time for the birds. Two birds here and of course the areal is darkened so thenocturlnal birds come out. Very interesting exhibits and a lot of fun during feeding time.

The staff is extremely friendly and hospitable.
