“Beautiful location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

The Town Basin is very lovely. However, it seems to us that Whangerei doesn't make enough of this gem. The shops and cafés all close far too early. The Basin is the town's best asset and they seem to squander it.

“Town Basin”

Really atmospheric basin. Lots of restaurants, cafes, boats, of course, and a great boarded walk right to the end of the promontary with loads of information and sculptures

“A great spot to spend two hours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

We stopped here for lunch while driving from Auckland to Russell on the Bay of Islands. In addition to the well-kept buildings, and interesting shops, the interpretative display boards along the walk in the park of the re-developed waterfront were very helpful in understanding some of the history of the area.

“The quality of the food belies the pub feel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

We loved the town centre location and the pub / restaurant overlooks the marina. The food was simply outstanding - we had the 'new twist' Thai Salad with crispy noodles and the two specials of the day : fish and shrimp and avocado salad.

Service was prompt if a little impersonal but the food and location made it a great dinner. Prices were similar to most pub prices around NZ, affordable and in this case superb value for money.

“Lovely location for the mariner and the landlubber”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013 via mobile

This is certainly and ideal tourist attracting for those travellers passing through Whangarei. The view of the yachts in the marina, the Parahaki monument in the background, the great kids playground and the lovely walk to the wake monument.plus the art gallery, clock museum and a car museum to visit.
A good supply of shops and restaurants and one fabulous ice cream shop.
However, there is one drawback as there seems to be in may parts of New Zealand. By five o'clock everything has closed leaving one restaurant open in the evening, it is a great pity especially for those visitors just arriving around four thirty looking forward to a drink and a choice of places to look at.
Why cannot something be done to keep the amenities open and to have a campaign to attract the locals for a drink on the way home from work and also the tourists who pitch up late afternoon.???.....
