Nice view, watch the boats, great on a sunny day, coffee shops for that relaxing sit down and a few shops but there is something missing there is no atmosphere. Not enough to do, unless you are a child and then there is a great park!

Each I visit Whangarei, I visit the town basin. First as a child to watch the fishing boats unload their catches on the wharf, and now to drink cappuccino and enjoy the views. On a sunny warm day, this is one of the best spots to have lunch, look at the art galleries and maybe buy a piece or two of fudge from the fudge shop on the water front. The special "big" breakfast at Tahuna Restaurant was filling, tasty, perfectly cooked and a fantastic spot - on the veranda overlooking everything. I just couldn't understand why there weren't many people! The cost was minimal, and breakfast kept me going all day - thanks team! Reva's is another great spot if you can get one of the outside tables right by the water. After breakfast, a wander around the art galleries and local stores is called for, and then follow the path to see the sculptures, the waka and the waves sculpture. A great way to spend a beautiful sunny morning in Whangarei.

I was first here in 2002 and the place was teaming with people. Now, it is more somber and there seems to be a lot of businesses that have moved. Was disappointed
