Owner description: Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand. The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more... The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups. Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

Hidden away in an old quarry in Whangarei a super place to relax and enjoy wandering through, so close to the city and yet it is a quiet pretty place to enjoy with a man made lake and lots of areas to relax. there will soon be a new building with cafe making it a great destination.

Starting less then 10 years ago , volunteers have turned this rocky hole into a magnificent Lake , water fall , flower filled valley with marvelous trails and walks ... what is especially striking is that unlike many gardens where a few specimens of a flower are present - here we are presented vast groups which suggests abdunance , care and joyful exuberance ... worth repeated visits !

There is much to see in this beautiful location. The dedication and entusiasm of the team of volunteers is very clear. Elsewhere in the world you would probably pay a significant admission fee to experience the Quarry Gardens. We went with a UK visitor who was comparing it,very favourably, with the famous Kew Gardens in London. The Quarry Gardens are free to enter, but please help its' continued development by leaving a donation in one of the collection boxes.

There are wonderful photo opportunities amongst the various walking routes-stop to admire the lake and the waterfall for example. It seems that ,deservedly, the Gardens are gaining in prominence as the word spreads among tourists and locals alike.Don't forget to take the camera (smartphone?) to capture some memories of your visit.

Add it to your itinerary while visiting Whangarei, Northland. Finally would just like to reiterate congratulations to all involved in this project

Once you've finished the A.H. Reed Memorial Kauri Park and the Hatea River Walks you must take the time to visit the Quarry Gardens. In 12 years all volunteer help had transformed this former quarry into a delightful oasis. Staffed by exceedingly friendly volunteers.

Great Arts Centre here in the old quarry buildings/outhouses. Some really interesting art going on amongst the higgledy piggledy arrangement of strange buildings that make up this centre. Shame there weren't any artisans at their trade. Good gift shop too. Hurrah for something different!
