Distinction Whangarei Hotel & Conference Centre
Ranked #17 of 34 Hotels in Whangarei
Reviewed January 4, 2013

We spent 3 nights on a "Summer Break" deal. The service from all staff was excellent - friendly, efficient and worthy of a 5 star hotel. The room was a good size with 3 comfortable chairs in the double room and the cleanliness could not be faulted. And at last a hotel with a kettle that fits under the tap! There was a note pad to jot down anything that needs attention by housekeeping or maintenance, fresh milk and ice available from fridges by the stairwells. The air conditioning was welcome and quiet. We made good use of the pool and spa, both well maintained and clean with a courtyard area outside. We thought the breakfast was excellent and the staff were obviously well trained in dining service. The location is excellent with a short walk over the bridge to the town basin. There is ample parking and plenty of guest entrances near the rooms. A thoroughly enjoyable stay and we will be returning.

This is probably the best hotel in Whangarei. Not a pleasant town to visit! Staff were fantastic. It was comfortable, but pricey for what it is. It's opposite the marina which is nice. It's a bit sprawling, so ask for a room close to reception, or you may get a long stroll.

I stay here often when on business in Whangarei. It's a bit dated and showing its age, but it does everything well. Service is good, it has all the facilities you would expect, including a good gym.
The restaurant is average, but quite ok. The walls are a bit thin so noise travels from room to room. But it's greatest asset is its location - just a short walk from the middle of town, overlooking the town basin and marina, close to several cafes and restaurants. To me, it's the only place to stay in Whangarei.

My wife and I booked a weekend deal for $109 for a standard room including breakfast for 2 people. I travel with work fairly often and this hotel is above average in my opinion. The room was big enough for a double bed, a single bed, chair, small table and even the pushchair! I think this is outstanding value for money and contrary to other reviews we didn’t find the room to be 'miles away' from reception (it was a short walk as we were at the rear of the hotel) or the breakfast to be poor. In fact being at the back of the hotel was great as there was plenty of parking very near the room and a side door we could use to come and go. The breakfast was great! bacon, sausages, eggs, toast, cereal, juice etc. etc. all included in the price. The only negative comments I have are on the quality of the bed and the room being a little noisy. Due to the way the hotel is designed the corridors make the sound travel so depending on the foot traffic the rooms can be a little noisy. The beds are too soft for me so I wasnt as comfortable as I would have hoped. All-in-all we enjoyed our stay very much and were pleasantly surprised with the hotel.

This is an excellent 3 star hotel, extremely well equipped and very clean. Room decor is dated, but clean and functional. Service is good and helpful and restaurant food is satisfactory. Walls are very thin and if busy or noisy I imagine you could have a terrible experience, however it was quiet the night I was there and I would have no hesitation in staying here again.

Very tidy basic room (we had a standard room with a view of the car park and a little garden out the window). Just a few minutes walk to the Whangarei Town basin were you can eat out at various cafes and restaurants if you didn't want to eat in the hotel restaurant. On the road to Whangarei airport and close to the town centre. If you have transport there are fabulous beaches in the area to check out, all approx 30 - 40 mins drive, Ruakaka, Tutukaka and Ocean Beach as well as the cute little bays on the Whangarei harbour.
As I said the rooms are basic, they do have a wide variety of skytv channels. The only problem we came across was the hot water would come and go when you were having a shower, when I mentioned this at reception they didn't seem surprised. The staff were nice and friendly although the only contact we had was at check in and check out.
If you are in Whangarei check out Tonic restaurant in Whau Valley and A Deco in Kensington both well worth a visit but make sure you book or you'll most probably miss out.
The Whangarei growers market is a treat to visit on Saturday Mornings in the Water Street Carpark, fresh produce direct from the growers.
Whangarei is a cute little city to visit and don't miss The New Zealand Fudge Farm in the town basin shops, the best melt in your mouth fudge ever.
As for the hotel, if your not spending hours in your hotel room it's adequate. Wouldn't pay the rack rate on our voucher said was NZD169 per night we paid NZD84 trougha one day sale website and when I asked the receptionist arranged a late checkout til midday the following day for us free of charge.

Excellent Value for money, the rooms are a little dated however they have been well maintained and are large, with enough room for a double and a single bed. a coffee table and two chairs, plus usual desk a side cupboards. There is also a safe, hair dryer, iron ironing board and flat screen television with 50+ digital chanels
Shower was a good size and towels are very fluffy and soft, the usual shampoo etc are supplied.
Beds were comfortable my husband had the best night sleep for a long time (not sure what is wrong with his bed at home).

Breakfast was good value and enjoyable, friendly staff. The location of this hotel is fantastic just across from the town basin, so you get a good view of the moored boats as you walk over the bridge to the basin, it took 5 minutes to stroll there.

Would difinitely go to this hotel again and I would recommend to friends, of course you will always have to look for a competitive price you are happy with.
