My mum and I spent eight nights here and rather than a motel room, what we got was a newly decked out, beautifully clean, two bedroom apartment for the same price that I've paid for squalid little dives in other parts of the world. There is a full kitchen, with new appliances, the place was warm and cosy, free wi-fi, and really helpful, friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 12, lovely sunny two bedroom unit.

I stayed here at last minute during a business trip as I was unable to book in at the Kingsgate in Whangarei and was after accommodation with Air Conditioning. I booked the 1 bedroom apartment.

A warm welcome was received when I arrived from the Kiwi owner. There is signage up advising of major renovations but it doesn't seem to affect the stay which is good. Cooked breakfast in the morning only cost $15.

The room was great and certainly was half renovated. I ended up sleeping in a single bed in the lounge as the bedroom had no TV, heating or fans and is where the queen bed was.

The beds were quite a bit bouncy/uncomfortable and I didn't sleep well the whole night but I believe time will fix this. The curtains in the room are also in separate pieces and you can't fully block the window with it which was a bit of a pain at night where people could see into the room.

All and all though, the benefits far surpassed the cons and I will be returning. Free wifi, Air con, FULLY STOCKED kitchen with Induction cooktop and oven. AMAZING PRESSURE in shower (Although no extraction fan so got a bit steamy). Great lighting, tons of power points. Comfortable couch.

No dinners/food available here but you literally walk 1 minute up the road to an amazing Thai restaurant which was affordable and delicious! Close by are a countdown supermarket, pharmacy and petrol station so this place has it sorted! No traffic noise either.

I will be returning and I will be recommending it! :)

Room Tip: Ask for a downstairs room unless you're keen on scaling outdoor stairs with heavy luggage :)

We dont go to Whangarei often so took pot luck at accommodation there. We were very pleasantly surprised. The motel was easy to find, just off SH1, and it was obvious that it was undergoing major renovations. Our room was fresh, modern & very well apointed and for the price we paid, extremely good value for money. Our host, Marina, was excellent. She certainly went out of her way to help and give directions, the "can do' attitude. Excellent breakfasts and the best cut lunch I have ever had from any Motel/Hotel. We will certainly be back.

My daughter and I stopped off here for a night and were greeted warmly by staff. Reception told us that some of the rooms had been upgraded and asked if would we like one. Yes please!
Very smart inside - up to the minute gadgets and everything beautifully presented. The amazing thing is this was available at a budget price - less in fact than other motels that perhaps offered less.
Certainly recommend this place to others.
Reception said they hoped to get all rooms upgraded by the end of this year.

Stayed here over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2012. Motel was fine, spacious, well equipped kitchen. Clean and good shower. There is a large supermarket 5 mins walk away which was very handy indeed. Just what we needed.

OK so this is a pretty average motel on the inner outskirts of Whangerei and clearly used by truckers and commercial travellers. I wouldn't normally have considered a review and we weren't planning a stop here but circumstances dictated and a couple of things stood out. Firstly our cabin had the best equipped kitchenette of any we saw - though we were not cooking. Out the back and a couple of hundred yards up the road behind the motel was the local pub - The Kensington Tavern. Real spit and sawdust - a "proper job", with atmosphere AND it produced fantastic food. The steaks were to die for and not expensive. Also a good range of beers more suited to UK palate, but they stop serving food at 8.30 pm sharp.
Not much to do in Whangerei but its worth driving down to the marina - lots a free parking - to see the boats from all across the globe and how those with more money than sense get fleeced by the local tourist shops
