Although this was infinitely preferable to climbing the flights of steps up to the top of the hill, the ride in the lift was underwhelming. The operator was polite but was on the phone when we descended, and reading a book when we ascended. Highlights really were the tunnel leading to the elevator, and the climb to the top of the Tower which warmed us up on a chilly morning and provided spectacular views of the town, river and sea. The climb took us about 5 minutes with stops to gaze out the barred window slots, and although I do not like heights I felt completely safe at the top.

This was like stepping back in time, we loved it and the fact that it is still an operating venture and used by locals daily is fantastic. The operator was friendly and informative. Well worth the look.

This was a very interesting place to visit. Amazing views from the top. We walked down the steps then travelled back up in the old elevator. Awesome lady operator, who has worked this lift for a number of years. Well worth visiting.

We took the elevator up to Durie Hill and went back down via the steps. It was a lovely sunny day so the view from on top of the elevator building was good. If you can manage it, then climb the steps to the top of the memorial tower as it offers a really fantastic view of Wanganui and the river.

It's not hard to climb the stairs but we paid $5 to go up then walked the steps down. Amazing views, well worth the visit.
