“On top of the hill”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2014

I like the copper fountain that plays when you insert coins - it's nifty...especially at night when it lights up
The many and varied duck varieties that run to greet you is exciting - especially if you come with food for them. Watch out if you have little ones as they can be intimidated with the volume and sheer number of wildlife that come and surround you. It is a real experience and the cacophony of greedy ducks and coots and geese all striving to scoff is a joy to behold.,
The various walks around the lake are a pleasant way to while away an afternoon on a sunny day but equally after it has been raining, the colours and smells are enhanced as you wander around. If you look really carefully you may even see a turtle in the water, along the bank or sunning itself on a log in the lake!
I loved the ice-cream we had from the on-site café and the meander around the Winter Gardens. The begonias were looking especially beautiful. It is very humid and hot inside but a bright spot in the Lake scene.
The walk-through bird aviary nearby is also a novelty and the birdlife in there is many and varied. The birds are used to people and are not skittery or frightened at all. It is a neat experience.
Virginia Lake is often passed-by in the hurry people have in their rush to get north... take my advice and have a rest-stop here. There is plenty of parking and if you miss out on the first car park there is one just 50 metres north that has double the car-parking available...keep an eye out or you'll miss it!

“Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2014 via mobile

This is a gem to be found in Wanganui. A very pretty
Lake with a safe and well maintained track around the lake which only takes 20-30 minutes to wander around. Hungry swans, pukekos and ducks always looking for stale bread. Quiet and peaceful reflective environment

“A lovely walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2014

Sited at the top of St John's Hill, the lake is a local attraction, especially at weekends. The walk-through aviary has 4 sulphur crested cockatoos, guinea fowl, pheasants, budgies, etc. and is really popular. Haven't tried the café. Winter gardens are usually spectacular with many orchids and begonias on display. Several pairs of white swans, black swans, ducks, pukeko and dab chicks live on the lake. there is an ornamental fountain that will play if you insert a gold coin. It is spectacular at night. The walk right around the lake is lovely and takes in various views of strategic planting. Really worth a visit.

“Site to view”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2014

I found it a lovely place to go and view the wild life there of ducks and there is a lovely cafe there. If the weather is lovely having a lovely walk and then take in the sun. maybe take a picnic. The children love it great for all ages.
