Virginia Lake is in the city on State Highway 3 - the road to New Plymouth. It is less than one kilometre from the main street. The lake many years back was the water supply for the city. The walk is about 2 kilometres on a flat well-maintained path, which goes right around the lake, bringing you back to the main road. The lake has many varieties of wild bird life, probably dominated by ducks. The walk is through bush-clad tracks, but with views of the lake throughout the walk. There is a place to get refreshments before or after the walk and also an enclosed winter garden area with magnificent begonias and other semi-tropical flowers. Total walk time around 20 - 30 minutes. Adjacent to the lake is a large bird aviary with a large variety of birds. You can walk into the aviary and be amongst the birds. An enclosed play area for small children is beside the aviary. At night much of the lake area is lit up until around 10pm with coloured lighting set in many of the trees. It all looks quite stunning at night.
