Our Unique Whanganui River Experience www.uniquewhanganuiriverexperience.co.nz guided by Jamie Anderson was positively unforgettable.

Jamie Anderson is an excellent guide with decades of experience on the river. My family of 6, three adults and three children were in safe hands throughout . Jamie surprised us by taking camp cooking to a new level! 'Carrot Cake with a Blueberry Cream Cheese Icing', 'Cheese and Ham Savory Scones', 'Chargriled Eye Fillet W Mushroom Sauce' are among an array of delights cooked up during our 5 days of paddle.

The Whanganui River is an incredibly interesting place. Did you know that along with the 'Pink And White Terraces' near lake Tarrawera the 'Whangani River' was at the beginning of the 19th century NZ main tourist attraction. We were more than happy to be in on of Jamie's traditional Canadian style kayaks paddling gracefully down river. We were humbled to spend two nights in a traditional marae, this is a Maori sacred open and communal meeting house, it proved to be a place of greatest spirituality ; the place that heightens people's dignity, and the place in which Māori customs are given ultimate expression. Here we sat together drank tea listened to 'Boy' the main man on site and all stood up, introduced ourselves and shared a little about who we are, what we do and how we came to be there. It was very magical and connecting evening.

Jamie's Unique Whanganui River Experience and my experience at the Marae personally gave me an opportunity to slow down, reflect on life and how important my family and ancestors are i my life. I will never forget those 5 days.

Traveling this beautiful scenic highway but be warned it isn't a highway as one would expect, but the scenery is breathe taking and takes one back to a peaceful past a journey not to be missed well worth the time.

Did the Wanganui River Road ride after reading the interesting brochure. We took off from Ohakune towards Pipiriki and drove along the river. Apart from a couple of beautiful scenery, the Wanganui River Road drive was nothing to shout about, compared to the many other scenic routes in NZ. About half of the road was under construction so had a bumpy and slow ride. The nicest spot is close to Wanganui City, so forget about the river drive but access the nice scenic spot (must see though) not too far from Wanganui city.

You can jet, canoe, and kayak on this river, which was navigable by steamboat a century ago. Drive up or down the windy river road (about 10km unsealed) to see an old flour mill and mission posts. There's still a paddle steamer down at Whanganui city.

We took the gravel road down from Pipiriki, but due to the heavy brush alongside the road, were unable to see the river except in a few spots (& not a particularly pretty river at that).
