Kingsgate Hotel The Avenue Wanganui

Booked this "hotel" which turns out to be a dirty old motel online for a single night in Wanganui. It turned out to be one of those places where you step one foot in and the strange smell of mothballs (or worse) makes you want to walk out backwards as fast as you can. Unfortunately, we didn't and rather stayed for a night which was a big mistake.

The biggest cause of my disappointment is their completely misleading webpage which shows images of some kind of mock dream-room that unfortunately looks very different in reality. We had a so-called "Superior room" which costs over 100 Dollar and turns out to be a tired looking worn shady kind of motel room. The bedroom was dimly lit and really old with a wobbly mattress and a noisy little bar fridge. The bathroom was an absolute shocker, not only really old and tiny but it also only had a bath tub which was starting to overflow as soon as you turned on the water. In the end, the whole room was steamy and under water which was just disgusting.

The website states that the Superior rooms "have views over our picturesque grounds to the pool area or have balconies facing the mountain". Well, I don't know what their idea of "picturesque" is but the concrete back wall of a discount supermarket advertising the "Lowest grocery prices in Town" is everything but in my eyes (see photos below). Never again!

We stayed in one of the older rooms at the side of the main reception (the rooms at the front look a lot nicer), the room was very dated as was the bathroom. It was clean and comfortable aswell as being spacious. We had our own parking in front of our room.

Bit of a lomg walk to town but 3 supermarkets on your door step.

Adequate for 1 night.

We were visiting for one night and wanted somewhere with a separate bedroom so that we could put our little boy could go to sleep before us.

The room was motel style so we could park right outside which was good as it was raining. Looked out on to Pak and Save's back wall. Room looked like it had been 'updated' recently as it was very clean, but updating had worked within what was already there - old fashioned steel shower base, old bathroom fittings, old TV desk, old kitchen.

Still, worked well for us as the hotel was surrounded by supermarkets, so we could buy and cook dinner in the kitchen which had oven, hob and microwave and we didn't have to spend extra on breakfast.

Other side of the room looked out onto a lemon tree and pool which would have been nice in summer.

Not sure Wanganui is a place you'd want to spend very long anyway, although admittedly we did go on a damp August weekend and got to listen to the hoons doing doughnuts at 2am.

Great room, lots of space and spotlessly clean. About 30 minute walk though to town centre, and we did not find any nice restaurants near by, so ate in the hotel. Dinner was excellent, but took an age to appear, in fact some diners gave up, and walked out before their meal was served. This might just have been a 'one-off' problem caused by staff shortage. Breakfast was fine, though unexceptional.

Not the best location for the town centre being just on the edge of my 'happy' evening walking distance. Nice little town with historic paddle steamer and enough heritage for a day or two. We found several nice restaurants and bars here, good stop-over.

The hotel was okay but (back in Dec 07) starting to age around the edges, just wear and tear nothing dramatic. The bedroom was reasonable but we faced onto the beer shop next door, a popular stop for many locals, so a bit busy (and noisy) at times.

Internet was in a separate room and not cheap, shame hotels charge (make so much) for this service. Staff here were good and helpful and the room was fairly good value so overall very satisfied.

Stopped in on Wanganui because I was interested in the vibrant art scene I had heard about - wasnt dissapointed. Wanganui is a fantastic place with much culture and some of the best unknown artists I have seen. Also really enjoyed our stay at the Kingsate - the staff were all friendly and charming and particularly helpful, and the superior rooms which seemed newly renovated were clean, spacious and opened up onto a nice pool area. The food was superb and like most of Wanganui was reasonably priced. I would highly recommend Wanganui as a great place to visit and the Kingsgate Hotel as a great place to stay.

Simply awful. The receptionist was eating a hot meal on the front desk when we arrived (charming). There was a cockroach in the bathtub. The shower head was broken and kept popping off (even though the water pressure was abysmally low). If we weren't so tired from our flights when we arrived, we would have demanded our money back and gone somewhere else.
