We were so glad that we chose to spend a couple of hours chugging up the Wanganui River. A real trip back in time. Very informative talk from the captain, who wore period clothing. Was able to see the boiler being stoked up. A one off experience. Recommended!

An enjoyable couple of hours steaming up and down the Wanganui River on the PS Waimarie hearing about all the history of the river highway, long before rail.

I booked for a large family group ranging in age from 8 to 72. We had a very memorable trip starting with the museum which provided lots of interesting background information which helped set the scene for the trip itself.
We found the staff lovely and very helpful, a great commentary was provided when we set off. However it was long and very hard to hear, meaning a lot of us zoned out to look at the view. There are several activities on board - shoveling coal for kids young and old, and the homing pigeon drop off.

Unfortunately due to the less than informative website, and the conflicting information we read in other reviews, we had two let-downs. 1) we mistakenly thought a light lunch was provided, so we were very peckish by the time we arrived back at base. If we'd known we could take a picnic we would have packed one. Several other people mentioned the same thing. 2) we thought there was a stop at the far end so you could get out and have a look around an area up river. Although the scenery was great, and not views you see all the time, we found the two hour trip there and back without a stop in between a wee bit tedious.

Hence the 4/5. Don't get me wrong, it is a great way to spend time with family or friends, and I would definitely recommend it to others. But for us it was probably a one off experience.

Thoroughly enjoyed our riverboat trip. Was interesting trying to imagine the journey the early settlers must have made to even get this far and then to journey up the mighty Whanganui River on one of these fabulous old steam boats.
Take time to go into the museum before or after your trip. You can learn the history, both of the river and boat, see its restoration and find out the part the Whanganui River played in the settlement pf NZ.
The trip lasts about 2 hours. During this time you can shovel coal into the boiler, if you wish or maybe even steer the boat.
There are snacks and hot drinks available.

We really enjoy steam... anything, really. It sounded like a good time to ride the old stam-powered, paddle-driven riverboat. We even got 2 for 1 coupons from our motel. The ride was great. Not only did we get to experience an abreviated (2 hour) version of an old-fashioned river excursion, but we got to shovel coal into the furnace and even steer the boat! We were allowed to go everywhere and see everything and it was a truly good time. I was grinning the whole time.
