“Start 'early in the morning'”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

We started at the Kopu Bridge, which is a good place to park your vehicle. Had a great time cycling the track with the mandatory stop at the Matatoke Cheese Barn which does a lovely Ploughman's lunch platter amongst other fine fare and coffee. Children can amuse themselves with the many hutches of baby rabbits and also alpacas grazing in the paddock over the fence.
Then on we went toward Paeroa, like 'mad dogs and englishmen out in the noonday sun'. Enjoyable but really too hot by then. So do start off the earlier the better.
We do hope that in time they will get some trees planted on the track as there is no shade whatsoever.
Also would be great if there could be some signage at the start of the track by the Kopu Bridge as you have to hunt out the actual start of the track.
Tip: Wear a large sunhat as even with helmets on I managed to get slight sunstroke.

Awesome Place. We liked it a lot and enjoyed the view from the Railway and at the top. A must on your Coromadel visit.

“Good day out”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

We rode from Te Aroha to Waihi and back in one day, having hired bikes in Te Aroha. It is a very well maintained track. It is probably best to use a mountain or comfort bike with wider tyres as it is all gravel. The cattle grids are quite narrow but save you from having to get off your bike at every fence. The highlight was the gorge which warrants getting off to explore the mine shafts on foot ; take a head torch. We had a break at the Waikino station cafe which served excellent food. There was also quite a bit of wildlife to spot. Over all an enjoyable day out on mostly flat and traffic free paths.

“Thames to Paeroa a little boring”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

I rode from Te Aroha to Thames, its flat but in places the gravel is quite thick, you also need to watch out where the bridges are as the metal has worn away and their is quite a dip in places. That said, its still a good ride, I rode the whole day and didn't meet one other walker or cyclist. The trail goes through farmland, but can be a little boring. I stopped at Matatoki CheeseBarn which also has a variety of animals in their paddocks worth looking at.
Paeroa is worth having a quick look around.

“A good ride”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Rode from Thames to Te Aroha - good ride although Paeroa not well setup for riding through. Flat and wide gravel path. Appreciated the cattle stops that you could ride straight through rather than getting off. Got shuttle back from Te Aroha to Thames - well organised and good trip. Stayed in Thames for night and then drove to Paeroa and did section to Waikino. Excellent ride although is uphill to Waikino. Had lunch then had fast ride back to Paeroa.
