“Economical place to stay in Palmerston North”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

If you are looking for an economical place to stay, then consider the holiday camp in PN. You can get a room to yourself for a very good price, and the shared kitchen and bathrooms are OK. I found the staff very friendly and helpful. I went in winter when the place was very quiet. It is not _very_ far from downtown, fairly near a good bus route, but better if you have transport of your own. I slept very well. It was far cheaper than a motel, and much more enjoyable than taking potluck with room mates in a dorm at a backpackers.

Room Tip: Some rooms are closer to the toilets (helpful for the night time)

We had been previously staying in top 10 brand holiday parks, so this was a significant change. The cabins are very basic. For example, there is no microwave but you get the stove and oven which we used without difficulty. As mentioned in some other posts, the infrastructure is rather dated e.g. the circuit breaker and switched are probably from the 60s or 70s. Having said that, it was functional and reasonably clean. We did have one cockroach run out from the kitchen while we were cooking, but given the location of the campsite next to a park and river, this was not unexpected. Our cabin did not look like the one in the management provided photo for this review site.

Location-wise, it was a short 5 min drive to the main downtown area wherewe could get groceries from a Countdown store.

And the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Overall, for the price, I woukd say this place a decent value, as long as you are ok with basic functional facilities.

Basic cabin for the night. Old and dated, but adequate and clean. Camp kitchen was clean and tidy, but had only one jug and one toaster available, luckily it was quiet, but if there had been a lot of campers staying, it would have been interesting trying to get hot water with only one small jug for everyone. Nice grounds and friendly welcoming reception person. All in all, a reasonable place to stay for a night if you are on a budget.

We stay in the self contained cabins. $NZ80. Here in Palmerston North was a kitchen, living room and bedroom. It is certainly very 60's and I doubt the TV will see in the digital age. but
the unit is detached, and you get good light and sun. Once you go back to a corporate Motel, you will miss the oven and the space and trees.
Sometimes various campers will loiter outside the cabins, and be noisy, a the case fur us.

Like much accommodation in NZ this place gouges prices for Internet . $15 is absurd. . I now look for free Internet acommodation

Room Tip: Unit 5 for us had good sun

My partner and I stayed for a few days 8th and 9th January 2013. We stayed in a tourist cabin which has a kitchen and an ensuite.

We found it very clean and comfortable and at NZ$65 a night, very affordable.

At the rear of the holiday park is a gateway which leads to the Victoria Esplanade which has a miniature railway, rose gardens, an aviary, winter garden and a great playground for the kids. Next to the park is also an aquatic centre.

The holiday park is also quite close to the central city, plus the staff are very friendly.

On their website they state "Come and stay at the greatest Holiday Park in Palmerston North." This is quite an easy claim to make when you read later on "Being the only holiday park in the area...."
They also claim that they have "....dedication to keeping the park in immaculate condition...."

So...

The showers are so small you can hardly turn around in them. There is mould growing on the walls. The door of the cubicle I was in had no lock and the door just kind of jammed shut. The light on the roof had obviously broken at some stage and the repair was some 100 mile an hour tape which had also now come adrift and was hanging loose.

Not really what I would call the most ideal holiday park. I probably wouldn't stay here again. I'd either freedom camp or bypass Palmerston North altogether.

On the plus side, the hosts were friendly and...... yeah...the hosts were friendly.
